Her parents moved to East Berlin, hence Bettina grew up in the DDR where she became a librarian and studied acting.
Her political activism opposing the DDR government got her arrested in '68. After her jail-time she studied singing.
After performing some critically songs she had to choose between jail or to never return to the DDR. In 1983 she moved to West-Berlin where she worked as a songwriter.
Her most famous song is "Kinder", which she wrote in 1979.
Hab doch gewusst

In Bettina Wegner's song "Hab' doch gewußt", the singer laments the feeling of loneliness and despair that can come with life's repetitive cycles. I knew it all along, it's the same as before"), highlights a sense of frustration and powerlessness in the face of unchanging circumstances. The singer pleads for connection with another person, but recognizes that ultimately, death is a solitary experience.
The first verse describes the absence of comfort and warmth in the singer's life, emphasizing the importance of physical touch and human connection. In the second verse, the singer expresses a deep fear of being alone, with no one to answer their questions or offer reassurance. The final verse enforces the idea that life's cycles continue regardless of our own personal struggles, and that this can exacerbate feelings of anxiety and hopelessness.
Overall, "Hab' doch gewußt" is a deeply introspective and emotional song that deals with themes of mortality, loneliness, and the cyclical nature of life. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of human connection and the struggles we can face when we feel isolated or alone.

I knew it was the same again
Is not a hand, not a warm and soft one.
Don't go away when I die and cry
Dying is bad because you are alone there.
Look at me and then give me your hands
Keep her away from me, ice black walls
Don't stand by the window and look at the street
Know you want to leave and know that I will let you.
I knew it was the same again
Is not a hand, not a warm and soft one.
Got my face and I'm afraid of the mirror
Lie on the ground and have no wings
Fear eats me up and she wants to kill me
Nobody is with me and wants my questions.
Tomorrow is yesterday and everything as always
Only my fear gets bigger and worse for me.
I knew it was the same again
Is not a hand, not a warm and soft one.
I knew it was the same again
Is not a hand, not a warm and soft one.
I knew it was the same again
Is not a hand, not a warm and soft one.
