Astral Body
Between the Buried and Me Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Analyze my own matter from above
Blacked out eyes in an existence overgrown
Never fall back down
Trapped in myself

Sold my hands
Envy them
Can't find the one

I slowly start to cut pieces of flesh from my body
Dig in and dissect
Collecting examples of what the outside world sees
Under it all
I know the devastation I have caused
Upon myself and this world

Speak to me freely
I am listening

Overall Meaning

The first verse of "Astral Body" seems to be a commentary on the concept of self-reflection. The singer sings about "analyzing [their] own matter," suggesting a deep introspection into their own existence. They also mention "blacked out eyes," perhaps a metaphor for feeling lost or disconnected from oneself. The line "never fall back down" could be interpreted as a desire to maintain this heightened state of self-awareness. But despite this, the singer feels "trapped" in themselves, suggesting that the act of self-reflection is both enlightening and oppressive.

The second verse is more abstract, but could be interpreted as a commentary on envy and self-hatred. The singer sings that they have "sold [their] hands" and envy them, but can't seem to "find the one." This could refer to a sense of inadequacy or self-loathing, as if the singer believes that someone else’s hands are better and wishes they could switch their own for them. The following lines describe a grotesque act of self-mutilation as the singer "cuts pieces of flesh from [their] body." This could be seen as a manifestation of their feelings of inadequacy and self-hatred, as they attempt to physically change themselves to be more like the idealized version of themselves they imagine others see.

The final line, "Speak to me freely, I am listening," is a plea for connection. After spending much of the song focused inwardly, the singer seems to be seeking some sort of external guidance or validation. Perhaps they’ve realized that introspection alone isn't enough, and that they need others to help them understand their place in the world.
