1. Big Mama (빅마마) is a Korean female pop and rnb group from YG Entertainment. Their first music video (for Break Away, their first single), showed four thin, pretty Korean women performing on a stage that are revealed to be lipsynchers; the actual singers are Big Mama, standing behind the stage singing passionately. This was "new" since major female artist in Korea are "thin and pretty" Big Mama showed another side. This strong single catapulted the group into the top of the music charts, with their album selling over 100,000 copies.
As the name of the band indicates, Big Mama is a 4-member female vocal band consisting of 4 “big” women – both in terms of physique and vocal talents. Despite their great talents in singing, most of the 4 members of the band had to perform as back chorus singers because of their “not so beautiful” appearances. Of course, that is only compared to the female singers who have Barbie-like figures and faces. Yang Hyun-seok, Former member of Taeji and Boys, discovered the talents of the 4 female vocalists and teamed them up as a band to stir up the local pop music scene with a sensational wave that great singers with great voices can be successful without brilliant dances or appearances. Shin Yeona, the eldest member of the band had made her debut in the pop music scene by winning a silver prize at the Riverside Song Festival held in 1995. Since then she had been actively performing as lyrics writer and singer behind the scenes of various television and radio commercials and theme songs for televisions dramas until she joined Big Mama. Lee Young-hyun had won a special prize at the Riverside Song Festival held in 2000. Lee Ji-young had performed with the Han Sang-won band as a vocalist. One of the most extraordinary conditions of contract for the band Big Mama was that if any of the members would have a plastic surgery, the whole band will have to be disbanded. Thus, the promotion of the vocal band focused on highlighting the band’s vocal talent rather than its appearance. As soon as its debut, the band proved that it’s only the music that counts for the success of a band.

Montserrat Pratdesaba was born at St Quirze de Besora (Catalonia) in 1963, and was nicknamed Big Mama at Barcelona's legendary "Cova del Drac" club where her career and love of the blues began.

The lyrics to Big Mama's "Break Away" depict the emotions of a woman who has been left by her lover. The song addresses the lover as she pleads with them to forget everything about her and to move on. She tells them to return her love that they have taken before leaving her. The woman contemplates the thought of the lover dying or leaving her, where she compares the two and says that her lover leaving her is too hard to bear. She hopes that her lover will see her and acknowledge her, just like the past. She reminisces how much she loved her lover and how much time she had to wait.
In the chorus, the woman says that she can't wait anymore for them to return and that she will make it easier for them to leave. She tells them that she can live without them and that she would throw away the pain she feels at that moment. She says that she left her lover so that her heart could be comfortable and that she has thrown the memories of her lover away. The woman refuses to acknowledge her former lover if they accidentally run into each other, as she is trying to forget them. However, she still thinks of them but decides that she can't live again looking at them, and begs them to throw all of her away and leave.
