Coma
Big Thief Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To get out
To get out
He kissed her skin
To get off
To get off
Off
From your protective coma
When you wake up
You wake up
You won't recognize your house
You won't recognize your house
Will you recognize the
Iris of the body?
Iris of the body?
You won't recognize your house
You won't recognize your house
Will you recognize the
Iris of the body?
Iris of the body?
You won't recognize your house
You won't recognize your house
Will you recognize the
Iris of the body?
Iris of the body?
You won't recognize your house
You won't recognize your house
You won't recognize your house
You won't recognize your house
You won't recognize your house
At first, the lyrics to Big Thief's song "Coma" may seem cryptic and confusing. However, upon further analysis, the song appears to be about the effects of trauma and the struggle to re-establish a sense of self after experiencing it.
The first stanza seems to describe a nonconsensual sexual encounter where the singer is seeking to "get off" by manipulating his partner. The lyrics "He put her in to get out" suggest that he may have found himself feeling trapped or helpless before deciding to use someone else for his own pleasure. The phrase "To get off" adds to the sense of selfishness and exploitation, as the singer is only seeking to satisfy his own desires. The repetition of "off" at the end of the stanza further emphasizes the feeling of disconnection and detachment.
The following lyrics appear to be addressed to someone in a coma, likely the singer's mother based on the line "You can wake up now, momma." The repetition of "you won't recognize your house" suggests that the trauma has caused a significant shift in worldview and identity, potentially leading to a dissociative state. The repeated phrase "Iris of the body" could refer to the eye as a symbol of perception and recognition, highlighting the struggle to reconcile past experiences with present reality.
In summary, "Coma" is a haunting and evocative song that delves into the aftermath of trauma and the struggle to form a cohesive and stable sense of self.

Jesus Christ. This is madly moving. Mystifying in a harrowing type of way.
@Miladuca
I’ve always interpreted this song as the feeling of dissociation after rape/assault. No longer being able to recognize the things that were once comfortable parts of your life.

This is the only way I hear the song now
@GeneverNoa
Yeah. Very well described. My first association with the "house" was a persons body in which the person doesn't feel safe anymore after somebody has used it. I'm not sure about the "iris of the body", though. It might be a metaphor for personal borders. The safe space surrounding us like an iris which has been destroyed? I'm wondering if anybody can write such lyrics without having been going through this...

YES omg i have always thought the same thing, I have such a hard time listening to this song and watering,
@Tejaroxy
Yes, that's what's I thought when I first heard this song. Somehow I figured that all listeners would have thought the same, but after seeing the comments here, I realize I was wrong.

Sooo poetic, haunting.. beautiful
@Tejaroxy
So dark and moving. Stopped me in my tracks when I heard it on the radio.

This song definitely grew up on me. The slow and mundane beginning was a not so welcoming introduction to what happens after 1:19 - which is beautiful and hauntingly delecate and comforting. As many interpretations have been written in the comment section, Coma may not be a literal state of the person. Maybe that's why the beginning was uneasy to go through for me..
