I'd Rather Have Jesus
Bill & Gloria Gaither Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold
I'd rather, rather have Him than riches untold
I'd rather have Jesus than houses or lands
I'd rather be led by His nail-pierced hands

Than to be a king of the vast domains
Than be held in sins dread sway
I'd rather have Jesus than anything
This world can afford today

I'd rather have Jesus than man's applause
See, I'd rather be faithful to His dear cause
Oh, I'd rather have my Jesus than all the worldwide fame
Yes, I'd rather be true to His holy, to His holy name

Than to be the king of a vast domain
Than be held in sins dread sway
Oh, I'd rather have You, Jesus, than anything
This world can afford today, oh, yes

I'd rather have Jesus than anything
This world can afford, can afford today

I just love Him
I love You Lord more than anything, anything

I'd rather have Jesus than man's applause
I'd rather be faithful to His dear cause
I'd rather have my Jesus than all the worldwide fame
You see, I'd rather be true to my Saviour's holy name

Than to be a king of a vast domain
Than be held in sins dread sway
Oh, I'd rather have Jesus than anything
This world can afford to be

You see, I'd rather have my Jesus
He's been good to me
I'd rather have my Jesus than any, than anything

This world can afford, can afford today
I love You

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "I'd Rather Have Jesus" by Bill and Gloria Gaither are about the choice of placing value on spiritual things versus material possessions. The songwriter is expressing the belief that having Jesus in their life is more valuable than any form of material wealth, including silver, gold, houses, lands or worldwide fame. The song is written as a personal testimony, where the writer declares their devotion and love for Jesus, stating that they would rather have Him than anything else this world can offer.

The lyrics portray the image of Jesus as one that has gone through suffering and sacrifice, as the words reference "nail-pierced hands". The image of Jesus as a man who willingly sacrificed his life for humanity is central to the Christian faith, and the songwriter's declaration that they would rather follow Jesus exemplifies the faith of many believers. The repeated phrases in the song highlight the writer's conviction in choosing Jesus over worldly possessions and desires.

I’d Rather Have Jesus – The Lyrics
I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
I’d rather be His than have riches untold;
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands,
I’d rather be led by His nail pierced hand.

Than to be a king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin’s dread sway,
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.

I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause;
I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause;
I’d rather have Jesus than world-wide fame,
I’d rather be true to His holy name.

He’s fairer than lilies of rarest bloom;
He’s sweeter than honey from out of the comb;
He’s all that my hungering spirit needs,
I’d rather have Jesus and let Him lead.

Mil vezes prefiro o meu Jesus

Caminho do bem, verdade e paz

Loes this song.

@hebronmulemia6667

Amen. This reminds me of the story in Mark 5 where the men of Gerasenes chose the concern of the worldly possessions over the having Jesus in their country one who had set a demon possessed man free.
To me and you it might not necessarily be pigs but other personal things and prosperity, preferences where we draw a line that puts our pursuit and commitment to Christ's course aside.
