That's How I Got To Memphis
Bill Haley & His Comets Lyrics

That's How I Got To Memphis (Tom T. Hall)
If you love somebody enough
You follow them wherever they go
That's how I got to Memphis
That's how I got to Memphis
If you love somebody enough
Then you go where your heart needs to go
That's how I got to Memphis
That's how I got to Memphis
I know if you'd seen her
You'd tell me cause you are my friend
I've got to find her
And find out the trouble she's in
If you tell me she isn't here
I'll follow by the trail of her tears
That's how I got to Memphis
That's how I got to Memphis
She' use to get mad and she'd say
She'd go back to Memphis someday
That's how I got to Memphis
That's how I got to Memphis
I got to find her
Tell her that I love her so
I'll never rest till I find out why she had to go
Thank you for your precious time
Forgive me if I start to cryin'

That's how I got to Memphis

Overall Meaning

The song ‘That’s How I Got to Memphis’ by Bill Haley and His Comets is a classic country tune written by Tom T. Hall in 1969. The lyrics speak of a man who is on a mission to find a woman he loves. The song emphasizes the idea of following the one you love to wherever they may be, and how true love can make a person do things they never thought possible. The repetitive chorus of “That’s how I got to Memphis” is like a declaration of his love and dedication to finding her.

The lyrics are filled with strong emotions and vivid imagery. The singer of the song is determined to find the woman he loves, no matter what it takes. He is asking his friend for help, as he believes his friend may know where the woman is. He is ready to follow her trail of tears if need be. The song ends with the singer thanking his friend for his help as he continues his search.

The song is a classic example of Tom T. Hall's pure country storytelling, a one-stop listen to everything that is great about country music. The song has been covered by various artists and has become a classic country standard. Tom T. Hall is considered one of the greatest country songwriters of all time, and this song, entrenched with emotion and feeling, is a remarkable example of his writing.

This is the best version of him on this song.

This is normally an excellent version but the speed on the playback is too slow (or perhaps Vogue's mastering of the single was faulty). This should be faster.

Never really liked this by Bill. I prefer the 1979 version.

Thanks for the upload but this is a horrible cover

Alex Fh

It normally sounds better than this but the the speed is a bit too slow. He recorded it again in 1979 and while this is a good record, the later version is better.
