P.S. I Love You
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dear, I thought I drop a line
The weather is cool
The fooks are fine
I'm in bed each night at nine
PS I love you

Yesterday we had some rain
But all in all I can't complain
Was it dusty on the train
PS I love you

Write to the Brown's just as soon as you're able
They came around to call
And not burn a hole in the dining room table
Now let me think; I guess that's all
Nothing else for me to say
And so I'll close, but by the way

Everybody's thinking of you
P.S. I love you

Overall Meaning

In Billie Holiday's famous song, "P.S. I Love You" we see the expression of the deepest form of love, which is often left unexpressed. The lyrics show a person far away from their lover, writing to them about their daily life, and while doing so, they sneak in their declaration of love. The first verse is used to create an image of near-perfect serenity. The writer sets the stage, painting a picture of a cool, pleasant day, with everything around them almost idyllically perfect. They describe their surroundings, saying the "weather is cool" and the "folks are fine". Yet, there is a great distance between this person and their loved one.

The second verse continues in the same vein, with the writer stating that despite the occasional rain, they have nothing to complain about. The writer then shows their love and concern for their loved one by inquiring if the journey was dusty, and ends with declaring their love for the person. Even in a letter that appears mundane, the subtext is apparent. The writer is clearly stating that although everything seems perfect, their love is all-encompassing, and it's almost as if the rest of the world is just incidental.

Overall, "P.S. I Love You" can be interpreted as a love note to her audience, as the song became one of her most popular and enduring songs, despite receiving mixed reviews when it was first released. The song is a great example of how the simplest of sentiments can be the most profound, with Billie Holiday showing us that even the most straightforward of words can express deep emotion.

Unmistakable voice and phrasing. Thanks to my mom and my aunt who frequently played Billie Holiday's music when I was a kid. I will always love to listen to her.

That's so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes. When you think of what that lady went through and still had the manner of an angel.

I remember this from my childhood (different singer?) - about early 1950's. It was a time of no cell phones, no texts, no Interstate highways. Communication was slower. Telephone calls were expensive.

Pure genius.
