Speak Low
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Speak low when you speak, love
Our summer day withers away too soon, too soon
Speak low when you speak, love
Our moment is swift, like ships adrift, we're swept apart, too soon
Speak low, darling, speak low
Love is a spark, lost in the dark too soon, too soon

I feel wherever I go that tomorrow is near
Tomorrow is here and always too soon
Time is so old and love so brief
Love is pure gold and time a thief
We're late, darling, we're late
The curtain descends, everything ends too soon, too soon
I wait, darling, I wait
Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon

Time is so old and love so brief
Love is pure gold and time a thief
We're late, darling, we're late
The curtain descends, everything ends too soon, too soon
I wait, darling, I wait

Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon
Speak low

Overall Meaning

when you speak, love, is a song that was originally written for the 1943 Broadway musical, One Touch of Venus, with music by Kurt Weill and lyrics by Ogden Nash. However, it was popularized by Billie Holiday in 1956 on her album Lady in Satin. The song features a slow-paced melody with a jazzy rhythm, and it is characterized by its melancholic and introspective lyrics.

The song is about the fleeting nature of love and the inevitability of time. It evokes a sense of sadness and nostalgia, as the singer reflects on the transience of their relationship and the certainty of its end. The lyrics express a desire to make the most of the present moment, to savor the love that is still alive before it fades away. At the same time, they acknowledge that time is a relentless force that will eventually separate the lovers, no matter how much they try to hold on.

The lyrics also feature a play on words, as the phrase "speak low" can be interpreted both as a request to speak softly and as a metaphor for keeping their love a secret, hidden from the outside world. This adds an element of intimacy and secrecy to the song, as if the two lovers are sharing a secret language that only they can understand.

Overall, Speak low when you speak, love is a poignant and bittersweet reflection on the fragility of love and the inevitability of time. It captures the melancholic mood of 1950s jazz and showcases Billie Holiday's emotive and soulful voice, making it a timeless classic that continues to resonate with listeners today.

Habla bajo cuando hables, amor
Speak low when you speak, love

Our summer day withers away too soon, too soon

Habla bajo cuando hables, amor
Speak low when you speak, love

Our moment is swift, like ships adrift, we're swept apart, too soon

Habla bajo cariño, habla bajo
Speak low, darling, speak low

Love is a spark, lost in the dark too soon, too soon
I feel wherever I go that tomorrow is near

Mañana está aquí y siempre demasiado pronto
Tomorrow is here and always too soon

Time is so old and love so brief

Love is pure gold and time a thief

Llegamos tarde, cariño, llegamos tarde.
We're late, darling, we're late

The curtain descends, everything ends too soon, too soon

Espero, cariño, espero
I wait, darling, I wait

¿Me hablarás bajo, háblame amor y pronto
Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon
Time is so old and love so brief

Love is pure gold and time a thief

Llegamos tarde, cariño, llegamos tarde.
We're late, darling, we're late

The curtain descends, everything ends too soon, too soon

Espero, cariño, espero
I wait, darling, I wait

¿Me hablarás bajo, háblame amor y pronto
Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon

Habla bajo
Speak low

Speak Low speaks to the ingenuity of Miss Holiday’s talent with its pulsating intro of the African drum that swiftly transitions, to the classical sound of the piano and its return to a rhythmic Latin and African drum melody. Billie’s Speak Low is exciting and energetic. It vibrates with a concise tight rhythmic diverse beat.

This has been one of my fav songs for years now! I find billie holiday singing to an almost bossa beat so exciting, just bc it was a departure from her usual musical arrangements! And throwing in some traditional arranging made it even better! Billie's voice was so clear on this recording too!
