These Foolish Things
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A cigarette that bares a lipstick's traces
An airline ticket to romantic places
Still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you

A tinkling piano in the next apartment
Those stumblin' words that told you what my heart meant
A fair ground painted swings
These foolish things remind me of you

You came, you saw, you conquered me
When you did that to me
I knew somehow this had to be

The winds of march that made my heart a dancer
A telephone that rings but who's to answer

Oh, how the ghost of you clings
These foolish things remind me of you

Overall Meaning

In Billie Holiday's song "These Foolish Things," she sings about various things that remind her of her lost love. The lyrics focus on seemingly insignificant items and moments that, despite their smallness, hold immense meaning because they remind her of her former love. The opening lines reference a cigarette with lipstick stains and an airline ticket, both of which were tangible reminders of her time with her love. However, it is not just things that remind her of her love, but also situations and sounds, such as the sound of a nearby piano or the words she stumbled over when trying to express her feelings. The chorus emphasizes the power of these memories, stating that โ€œthese foolish things remind me of you.โ€ The last lines of the song point to the persistence of this love and its impact on her, with the image of a ghost clinging to her.

Through the lyrics of โ€œThese Foolish Things,โ€ Billie Holiday creates a moving expression of the way small, seemingly unimportant moments can hold immense emotional significance. The song captures the power of memory and association in shaping our understanding of love and loss. The lyricsโ€™ emphasis on small details and memories rather than grand gestures or romantic clichรฉs speaks to the universality of the feelings of love and heartbreak.

Oh vocรช nunca vai me deixar ser?
Oh vocรช nunca vai me libertar?
Nรฃo hรก escapatรณria que eu possa ver
E ainda aquelas pequenas coisas permanecem

รช
Essas coisas tolas

Vocรช veio

Vocรช me conquistou
Essas coisas tolas
Lembram-me de vocรช
Primeiros narcisos
E cabos longos excitados

E luz de velas

Em mesinhas de canto
E meu coraรงรฃo ainda tem asas
Essas coisas tolas me lembram de vocรช
O parque ร  noite
Quando a campainha soou

A Ilha de Franรงa

Com todas as gaivotas em torno dele
A beleza que รฉ a primavera
Essas coisas tolas
Lembram-me de vocรช
Convites de danรงa
Essas coisas tolas
Lembram-me de vocรช

Perfume de gardรชnia
Persistente em um travesseiro
Morangos silvestres
Apenas sete francos por quilo
E meu coraรงรฃo ainda tem asas
Essas coisas tolas
Lembram-me de vocรช
O sorriso de Garbo
E o perfume de rosas
Os garรงons assobiando
Quando o รบltimo bar fecha
A canรงรฃo que Crosby canta
Essas coisas tolas
Lembram-me de vocรช

Que estranho
Que doce

O cheiro de folhas ardentes
O lamento de vapores
Dois amantes na rua

I thank God that Billie Holiday was recorded and that countless generations can hear this magic. Her voice is just as nuanced and musical and amazing as every instrument in this recording and her phrasing and diction are genius. She infuses a playfulness into this song that makes it happy rather than sad, and that's the true meaning of the song... you can literally hear the foolishness and playfulness in the way Billie sings it to the point where you remember maybe a lost love or sad relationships but you're forced to laugh.

@daphneavenging

May she never be forgotten.

On this early recording Billie is totally immersed in with the band. The artistry involved here is magic.

@nadyarossi5102

She can sound wistful & heartbroken all at the same time.

Out of all the soulful ladies, Billie sang the standards the best, hands down.
