Bird
Billie Marten Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's underwater again
Somebody's daughter, a friend
In the night in the dark in the cold
As she walks far away

Nobody's watching
Drowning in words so sweet
Mild is the water
Caught as a bird once free

I don't mind

Hope is a distance unreached
Ink on her skin incomplete
And the faint sound of friends
As she neared to the end she had peace

Nobody's watching
Drowning in words so sweet
Mild is the water
Caught as a bird once free

I don't mind
I don't mind

Where does her start go from here
Lost in the grip

Nobody's watching
Drowning in words so sweet
Mild is the water
Caught as a bird once free

Nobody's watching
Drowning in words so sweet
Mild is the water
Caught as a bird once free

I don't mind
I don't mind

I don't mind
I don't mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Billie Marten's song "Bird" evoke a feeling of helplessness, loneliness, and sadness. The song talks about a girl who is drowning, both literally and metaphorically. She's somebody's daughter, a friend, but nobody is watching her as she walks away into the cold night. She is caught in words that sound sweet but which are dragging her down. The water that she's in is mild, but it's still suffocating her. The bird once free is now trapped in this current, and although she has reached the end, she's at peace with it. There's a sense of resignation in the lines "I don't mind" which is both heartbreaking and comforting.

Billie Marten's "Bird" seems to be about mental illness and the hardship of trying to come to terms with it. The girl in the song is lost and doesn't know where her start goes from here. She's inked with incomplete tattoos, which might suggest that she's trying to find a sense of permanence, something that can't be erased, something that lasts. But the tattoos are incomplete, and so is she. The faint sound of friends is a glimmer of hope amidst the looming darkness. They are there, even though they might not understand entirely what's happening. The song ultimately paints a picture of someone who's trying to stay afloat, but more often than not, slipping further down into despair, and there seems to be no way out.
