Back in the U.S.S.R.
Billy Joel Lyrics

Oh, flew in from Miami Beach B.O.A.C.
Didn't get to bed last night
On the way the paper bag was on my knee
Man I had a dreadful flight
I'm back in the U.S.S.R.
You don't know how lucky you are boy
Back in the U.S.S.R. (Yeah)
Been away so long I hardly knew the place
Gee it's good to be back home
Leave it till tomorrow to unpack my case
Honey disconnect the phone
I'm back in the U.S.S.R.
You don't know how lucky you are boy
Back in the U.S.
Back in the U.S.
Back in the U.S.S.R.

Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the West behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
That Georgia's always on my mind

Aw come on!
Ho yeah!
Ho yeah!
Ho ho yeah!
Yeah yeah!

Yeah I'm back in the U.S.S.R.
You don't know how lucky you are boys
Back in the U.S.S.R.

Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the West behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
That Georgia's always on my mind

Oh, show me around your snow-peaked mountains way down south
Take me to your daddy's farm
Let me hear your balalaika's ringing out
Come and keep your comrade warm
I'm back in the U.S.S.R.
Hey you don't know how lucky you are boys
Back in the U.S.S.R.

Oh let me tell you, honey
Hey, I'm back!
I'm back in the U.S.S.R.
Yes, I'm free!
Yeah, back in the U.S.S.R.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Billy Joel's song Back in the U.S.S.R. describe the return of the singer back to the Soviet Union after a long absence. The song opens with the singer detailing his flight from Miami Beach, which was so terrible that he had to hold a paper bag on his knee. However, despite the rough journey, the singer declares that he is happy to be back in the U.S.S.R. and notes that those who never left don't know how lucky they are. The singer comments that he's been away so long that he hardly recognizes the place but is excited to be home. He tells his honey to disconnect the phone, insinuating that he wants to spend time alone with her.

As the song goes on, the singer expresses his affection for the women of the Soviet Union, especially those from Ukraine and Moscow, who are so beautiful and leave the Western girls behind. He also references Georgia, which is on his mind, possibly because of the Soviet occupation at the time. The singer asks to be shown around the country, to see the snow-peaked mountains down south and to hear the balalaika ringing out while he keeps his comrades warm. The song ends with the singer expressing his joy at being back in the U.S.S.R. and being free.

Overall, Back in the U.S.S.R. can be interpreted in different ways. Some see it as a celebration of the Soviet Union, while others think of it as a parody or satire of the Soviet propaganda. It could also be viewed as a homage to the Beach Boys’ California sound.

One of the things that I love about Billy Joel is his ability to change how his voice to fit that song. For most of this, he sounds barely indistinguishable from Paul McCartney. I am a major Beatles fan, but I have to say that I like Billy Joel's cover better than the original.

jirehguy

@Timer that is his work at play. He sung all of those parts, and well I might add

Timer

Look at “For the longest time” and this song. You can see his voice changes when the tone of the song is different

Philip Acinapuro

Yeah but he has an advantage because his voice already sounds a lot like Paul's lol

Fleetwood Patch

People don’t realize how impactful this concert really was. Best artist of all time!

1:18 That kid, the one beating the shit out of the stage with the drumstick. That makes me tear up a little. He didn't give a fuck about anything else, just sheer joy at being in the moment, a commodity hard to come by in the U.S.S.R.

RhythmDroid

@TheFamousMockingbird for someone who watches Hasanabi, we can safely assume you know jack shit about communism.

TheFamousMockingbird

Dude people had joy in the Soviet Union. It wasn’t the bleakest most miserable thing in a perpetual state. People still did people

Howard Barnett

@Hotdiggity11 Not about being modernized, it's about being an oppressive regime. Which did not end all at once when Gorbachev took office.

Hotdiggity11

This was the late 80s. The USSR was decades removed from being what it was during Stalin's reign and were largely modernized by this time. The USSR dissolved like 4 years after this anyways.
