Weekend Song
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This back-breakin', bone-shakin', belly-achin', hard-workin'
Two more hours to go
Yes, it's keeping me alive doin' nine to five
And I ain't got nothin to show
Pretty soon I'll be leavin'
With the wages I'm receivin'
But I know it's gonna be all right
Come on, babe, and take me away
We got some money to spend tonight

Pick me up at the station
Meet me at the train
Have a meal and a shower and a change of clothes
I can't afford a vacation
But I can take the strain
Long as I can be with you
Find a way to burn it as quickly as I earn it

Yes, it's back-breakin', bone-shakin', belly-achin', hard-workin'
Two more hours to go
Seven long years for the same corporation
And I ain't got nothin' to show
And tonight when I'm leavin' I'll be just breakin' even
But I know it's gonna be all right
I shake off my blues when you put on your shoes
We got some money to spend tonight

Oh, I don't wanna stand here and sound accusin'
Everybody does their share of losin'
If I'm gonna lose it I might as well be doin' it right

Pick me up at the station
Meet me at the train
Have a meal and a shower and a change of clothes
I can't afford a vacation
But I can take the strain
Long as I can be with you
Find a way to burn it as quickly as I earn it

Yes, it's back-breakin', bone-shakin', belly-achin', hard-workin'
Two more hours to go
Yes, it's keepin' me alive doin' nine to five
And I ain't got nothin' to show
And tonight when I'm leavin' I'll be just breakin' even
But I know it's gonna be all right
Come on, babe, and take me away
We got some money to spend tonight

Come on, babe, take me away
We got some money to spend tonight

Overall Meaning

The song "Weekend Song" by Billy Joel talks about the struggles of working nine to five and how it's keeping the singer alive but he has nothing to show for it. The first verse starts by stating that the job is hard and is taking a toll on his body but he still has two more hours of work to complete. He then continues to say that even though he's not getting much from his job, it's keeping him alive. The singer admits that he has no savings and he can barely afford to take his sweetheart out for a meal or a vacation. However, the singer hopes that everything will be all right as he has someone whom he loves and can spend money with.

The second verse emphasizes that he doesn't want to sound accusing but everyone does their share of losing. He then reaffirms his love for his sweetheart and how being with her gives him the strength to work hard every day. The singer knows that he is not making much money, but he loves spending time with his significant other, even if it means finding a way to burn money as soon as he earns it. The chorus repeats, "Come on, babe, and take me away, we got some money to spend tonight", which is evidence of his eagerness to spend time with his sweetheart and leave behind the hard work life.

It’s back-breakin’, bone-shakin’, belly-achin’, hard workin’
Two more hours to go
Yes, it’s keepin’ me alive, doin’ nine to five
And I ain’t got nothin’ to show
Well soon I’ll be leavin’ with the waivers on the ceiling
But I know it’s gonna be all right
Come on, baby, take me away
We got the money to spend tonight

Pick me up at the station, meet me at the train
Have a beer, and a shower and a change of clothes
I can’t afford a vacation but I can take the strain
As long as I can be with you
Run away as bullets, as quickly as I can

It’s back-breakin’, bone-shakin’, belly-achin’, hard workin’
Two more hours to go
Seven long years for the same corporation
And I ain’t got nothin’ to show
And tonight when I’m leavin’, I’ll just be breakin’ even
But I know it’s gonna be all right
Oh, take off my boots and put on some shoes
We’ve got some money to spend tonight

I don’t want to stand here and sound accusing
Everybody does their share of losing
Everyone’s a loser and I’m gonna turning right

Pick me up at the station, meet me at the train
Have a beer and a shower and a change of clothes
I can’t afford a vacation but I can take the strain
As long as I can be with you
Run away as bullets, as quickly as I can
