Anniversary Song
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, how we danced on the night we were wed
We vowed our true love, though a word wasn't said
The world was in bloom, there were stars in the skies
Except for the few that were there in your eyes

Dear, as I held you close in my arms
Angels were singing a hymn to your charms
Two hearts gently beating, murmuring low
"Darling, I love you so"

The night seemed to fade into blossoming dawn
The sun shone anew but the dance lingered on
Could we but recall that sweet moment sublime
We'd find that our love is unaltered by time

Darling, I love you so

The night seemed to fade into blossoming dawn
The sun shone anew but the dance lingered on

Could we but recall that sweet moment sublime
We'd find that our love is unaltered by time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bing Crosby's "The Anniversary Song" depict a nostalgic and romantic reflection on a past wedding night. The song begins by reminiscing about the joyous atmosphere of the wedding, with the couple dancing and silently pledging their love to each other. The world around them seems to be in perfect harmony, except for the few stars that could not compare to the sparkle in the beloved's eyes.

The second verse describes the intimate moment between the couple, as they hold each other closely. The singer feels as if angels are serenading them, affirming the beloved's irresistible charm. The hearts of the couple beat together in sync, whispering sweet nothings and expressing their deep love for one another.

As the night merges into dawn, the dance may come to an end, but the memories and emotions remain. The sun rises, yet the magic of that special moment lingers on. The desire to relive that sublime moment becomes evident as the lyrics suggest that if they could only recapture the past, they would realize that their love is timeless and unchanged by the passage of time.

The song beautifully captures the essence of enduring love and the longing to return to a cherished moment. It speaks to the power of memories and the belief that true love can withstand the test of time.

So touching. So beautiful. We hardly hear it in this generation

@lavalampluva55401

Just seems like music today, especially pop, is all about being vulgar and "edgy".

@orlyklonsky7395

This version by Bing is wonderful! Nobody sings like Bing! But, I have to say I prefer Al Jolson's rendition---I can't explain it, but Jolson's voice just seems to reach right into my soul....... This is just a beautiful love song. ❤

@smooth_sundaes5172

I have to agree. There are some great singers who sing it but Jolson steals it for me too. Maybe it's the quirky quality of his voice but it grabs your heart.

@TheTurulhawk

Yes, I agree. I'm not mad about Al Jolson's voice, but he sings it like he means it, like he's actually singing it to the woman he loves. I find this rendition impersonal.

@lfcmonkeyyyman6229

Not a bad rendition, but have to say Jolson sung it better in my opinion. Maybe it's because I love the movie with Larry Parkes and the scene with this song in was a big turning point in the Jolson Story, and the first time he'd sung for so long that it holds a place in my heart ❤.. just maybe that!!

@farzinnouri3835

Agreed. The Jolson version has that power to make one look inside/think/reminisce.

@Goshawk49

I agree. There's just something about Al Jolson's voice & this song.

@mariamarian3218

Yes. Jolson THE Anniversary Song singer. Cosby and also Andy Williams do well but it is the music and the words that keep this song singing in my heart when we dance it together again.

@zachkubish598

Crosby, my child.
