Begin the Beguine
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When they begin the beguine
It brings back the sound of music so tender,
It brings back a night of tropical splendor,
It brings back a memory evergreen.

I'm with you once more under the stars,
And down by the shore an orchestra's playing
And even the palms seem to be swaying
When they begin the beguine.

To live it again is past all endeavor,
Except when that tune clutches my heart,
And there we are, swearing to love forever,
And promising never, never to part.

What moments divine, what rapture serene,
Till clouds came along to disperse the joys we had tasted,
And now when I hear people curse the chance that was wasted,
I know but too well what they mean,

So don't let them begin the beguine
Let the love that was once a fire remain an ember,
Let it sleep like the dead desire I only remember
When they begin the beguine.

Oh yes, let them begin the beguine, make them play
Till the stars that were there before return above you,
Till you whisper to me once more,
"Darling, I love you!"

And we suddenly know, what heaven we're in,
When they begin the beguine

Overall Meaning

Bing Crosby's song, "Begin the Beguine" is a beautiful ballad that reflects on the power of melodies to evoke memories, feelings, and sensations. The lyrics describe how the sound of music can transport the singer back in time to a night of tropical glamour and romance. The mention of stars and the shore conjure up images of a beautiful beach, surrounded by palm trees, where a live orchestra is playing. The tone of the song is nostalgic and wistful, conveying deep emotional longing for a past that can never be relived in the same way again.

The lyrics also reveal that the melody of "Begin the Beguine" has a special significance to the singer, as it reminds them of a moment of intense love and connection with a partner. The song is so powerful that it can "clutch" the singer's heart and make them feel as if they are reliving that moment once again. However, the song also brings a sense of sadness and regret, as the memory of that perfect moment is clouded by the fact that it can never be fully recaptured.

Overall, "Begin the Beguine" is a poignant reflection on the role that music can play in shaping our emotions and memories. The song captures the bittersweet nature of nostalgia and serves as a reminder that while we can never fully relive the past, we can still appreciate the beauty and power of the moments we have experienced.

I play this song to remember my dad who came to Australia from Poland after the war and didn't speak a word of English, but he loved this Bing Crosby song. He would have a whisky, put Bing Crosby on and get a warm happy buzz on, and even though I was raised here and couldn't speak Polish very well we understood each other. I miss him so much.

Muchos son los que han interpretado esta romántica canción when they  begin the beguine, pero ninguno como Bing Crosby, su voz es inconfundible.

Bing didn't record the Cole Porter tunes until later, and he remarked, that, "I waited to long." (to record such tunes with highs and lows). I learned so many wonderful and interesting things in his Fan Club, The International Crosby Circle, should anyone want to join or love Bing.

Ah, Der Bingle. I sported a similiar jacket, and hat when I was a big fan of his. Still a fan of the maestro, but a lot more cynical, and less impressionable.🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐
