Feudin' and Fightin'
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Feuding and fussing and a-fighting
Sometimes it gets to be exciting
Don't like them ornery neighbors down by the creek
We'll be plumb out of neighbors next week

Grandma, poor old grandma
Why'd they have to shoot poor grandma
She lies 'neath the clover
Someone caught her bending over

Picking up a daisy
Feuding and fussing and a-fighting
This is a wrong that needs a righting
Let's get that funeral service over
So then we can start in a-feuding again

Feuding and fighting and a-fussing
That's all that's going on with using
We are such neighborly people peaceful and sweet
All except when we happen to meet
Daughter, baby daughter

Poisoned all the neighbors chickens
Daughter hadn't oughter
Least until she could run like the dickens
They hit her with a shovel

Feuding and fighting and a-fussing
No use a-standing here a-cussing

Let's give our daughter a pistol now that she's four
And go feuding and fighting some more

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bing Crosby’s song “Feudin’ and Fightin'” are a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the feud mentality between neighbors. The singer pokes fun at his own community's obsessions with petty rivalries and the outrageous lengths to which they go to get back at one another: grandma being shot for picking up a daisy, the baby daughter poisoning neighbors’ chickens, and ultimately, violence escalating to the point where the singer suggests arming the four-year-old daughter with a pistol. The song highlights how absurd and pointless can these feuds become, as well as how easy it can be to get caught up in them.

Beyond the humorous nature of the lyrics, this song also serves as an ironic commentary on the dark aspects of human nature: the willingness to fight and even kill over petty disputes. By featuring extreme examples of deadly disputes among neighbors, the song serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of harboring grudges and the harm it can cause.

Crosby is one of those rare birds whose voice only sounds like him. Totally unique.

My grandfather used to sing this song. He was a WWII veteran who served for 30+ years in the navy. He moved back to the country in Louisiana after retirement. Took care of my grandmother and great-grandmother until the day he died. A sweetheart and a wise man. I never understood the turmoil in my family and their feuds between neighbors and cousins until I was older. In retrospect, his comedic timing and satire were perfect. I learned to appreciate this song and understand his humor too late. He was a great man. I still miss you, Howard.

HUG THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE AND RESPECT. They aren't here for long.

My grandpa always sang just the part about poor grandma. US kids thought it was hilarious grandma got shot picking daisies and my grandma would just stare at everyone giggling away. I never knew he was singing a real song. Great memories.

Jared Porter

My grandma would sing parts of this too. I thought she made it up, but out of curiosity I looked it up and was brought here.

Now I have to ask her about it more and thr other funny songs she sings.

@cgyang  I'm glad you commented. I forgot about this and now I'll listen to it again for the memories. Hard to believe how fast time goes.

In the early days of his career, Bing did a wide variety of styles.

My mom used to sing all the time she was working at home, and this was one that I forgot she sang.  Thanks for bringing back some great memories.  I'm not sure why we kids thought it was so funny the neighbors offed grandma, but we thought it was hilarious.
