You Belong to Me
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

See the pyramids along the Nile
Watch the sun rise on a tropic isle
Just remember, darling, all the while
You belong to me

See the market place in old Algiers
Send me photographs and souvenirs
But remember when a dream appears
You belong to me

I'll be so alone without you
Maybe you'll be lonesome too, and blue

Fly the ocean in a silver plane
Watch the jungle when it's wet with rain

Just remember till you're home again
You belong to me

Overall Meaning

The song "You Belong to Me" by Bing Crosby is a classic love song that evokes emotions of distance, longing, and a strong sense of possession. The opening line, "See the pyramids along the Nile," conjures an image of a distant land, and the singer speaks to his lover to experience all the wonders the world holds but always remember that they belong to each other. The line, "Watch the sun rise on a tropic isle," expresses the beauty of nature, but the purpose of this line seems to be to suggest that even if his lover were to witness the most stunning sunrises in the world, they are meaningless without him.

The next verse takes the listener to Algiers, where the market place evokes the essence of a foreign land. The singer requests photographs and souvenirs, and here we can see a sense of desire to have a piece of his lover as they experience the world. The line, "But remember when a dream appears, You belong to me," expresses the idea that dreams are fleeting, and though they are indulged, they are never more important than their deep connection. The final verse speaks of flying across the ocean and watching the wet rainforest, but time away never means they are free from the other's grasp; they still belong to each other.

Overall, the message of the song is a powerful declaration of love that does not diminish when they are apart; in fact, their love grows stronger over any distance. This sentiment remains relatable to this day, and the song continues to be a timeless classic.

I'm a 52 year old woman (born in 1968), and I have always loved this era of music. Bing Crosby is one of my favorites. That sexy baritone of his is unlike any other. His silky-smooth voice is just perfect for this song. I've heard several versions of "You Belong To Me," some good, some not so good. Bing Crosby's version is way up there on my list of favorites.
