The Anchor Song
Björk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I live by the ocean
And during the night
I dive into it
Down to the bottom
Underneath all currents
And drop my anchor
As this is where I'm staying
This is my home

I live by the ocean
And during the night
I dive into it
Down to the bottom
Underneath all currents
And drop my anchor

As this is where I'm staying
This is my home

Overall Meaning

Björk's Anchor Song is a weighty and stirring song that tells a story of her adventurous spirit and her bond with the ocean. The lyrics read like a passionate declaration of love for the sea. The opening line, "I live by the ocean," establishes the setting, which is where Björk feels most at home. She immerses herself in the ocean, diving into it at night, reaching to the bottom of all currents with a sense of confidence and ease. The line, "And drop my anchor," is a symbol for Björk's courage and resilience as she commits to the sea and all that comes with it. The repetition of the chorus reinforces this idea that the ocean is where she belongs, and she is determined to stay.

This song hits me so hard. All my life I feel like I live in an ocean, just coasting and moving from current to current.

On my 40th birthday I finally moved into a house I bought for myself. It wasn't a grand one, but it's very homey and has a nice view of the city. I was unpacking my stuff in the living room and "DEBUT" was playing in the speakers. When I heard the song I started crying so hard I had to postpone my unpacking to next day.

Oh Björk. You're so wonderful.

The first time I saw Björk live she opened the set with this song. It was one of my fist concerts ever and that moment was so powerful to me. It touched me very deep inside, surrounded by a screaming crowd yet so alone. The day after and several years later I couldn't listen to this song without shedding a tear, feeling that moment again. It has never happened anything similar to me with any other song or artist since then, and as a music lover I like hundreds or even thousands of other artist and even if I don't listen to her frequently anymore, I still treasure this moment as one of the best of my live. I love her.

So jealous

@KiwiGirlnCo

Same for me, I was 17. My first and only concert. I hate crowds so would only go to this one. I am 40 now lol

@@KiwiGirlnCo I perfectly understand you. My dream was to see Bjork live but she did not come much to Eastern Europe so I had to wait more than a decade for her concert in Istanbul in 2008. After it, I’ve lost the need to attend music shows.

@CaptMortifyd

I live in a harbour. Sometimes at night I like to play this and look at the stars over the masts - and life is perfect.

I used to live by the ocean and now I'm landlocked. This song makes me very, very homesick.
