His fist gig was New Year’s Day, 1982 and his debut single 'Human Features' was released the same year. Black had two top-ten hits in the UK in 1987: 'Sweetest Smile' and 'Wonderful Life'. The album of this name reached no. 3 in the UK album chart, but following albums and singles did not enjoy similar commercial success. He was able to continue recording music, releasing 14 albums over the course of his life. His latest, ‘Blind Faith’, was released in 2015.

The Evening
Black Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
It's all right, over here
In the silent, empty places,
It's shining, in the shadows
It's all right, over here
It's OK, over here
Up in my tree, where you can see
You know that you don't even know
(Yeah yeah yeah)
You think just like they told you to
(Yeah yeah yeah)
Look within you for the Kingdom,
Then you'll see, you can see.
Come on, over here
It's all right, over here
In the middle, of the daytime,
Fell the colors, pull from inside
And come on, over here,
It's all right, over here
With your new eyes, turn on your light
Let your love glow, leave your Ego
You know that you've just got to go
(Yeah yeah yeah)
You were blind, trapped inside their sty
(Yeah yeah yeah)
But now you see that you know nothing
So just go and let it show
The song "The Evening" by Black invites the listener to a serene and introspective space, far away from the noise of the world. The opening lines, "Come on, over here, It's all right, over here," set a welcoming and reassuring tone, encouraging the listener to join the singer in a place of peace and calm. The reference to "silent, empty places shining in the shadows" paints a picture of a tranquil environment where one can find solace and clarity.
As the lyrics continue, there is a sense of encouragement to break free from societal expectations and preconceived notions. The mention of "Crystal visions on a Sunday" suggests a moment of epiphany or spiritual awakening, urging the listener to look within themselves for enlightenment rather than blindly following external influences. The repetitive refrain of "You know that you don't even know, You think just like they told you to" emphasizes the need to question, explore, and discover one's own truth.
The song then transitions to the daytime, signaling a shift in perspective and a call to embrace one's true colors and inner beauty. The imagery of "colors pulled from inside" suggests a blossoming of the self and an emergence of authenticity. The invitation to "turn on your light" and "let your love glow, leave your Ego" speaks to the idea of embracing one's inner light and shedding inhibitions or false constructs.
In the final verse, there is a powerful realization of self-awareness and empowerment. The acknowledgment that "you were blind, trapped inside their sty" but now seeing through the veil of illusion signifies a liberation from societal constraints and a newfound sense of clarity. The directive to "just go and let it show" encourages the listener to confidently be themselves without fear or hesitation, embracing the journey of self-discovery and growth. Overall, "The Evening" by Black conveys a message of self-realization, inner strength, and the importance of seeking truth within oneself.
