Native to the eclectically romantic city of Montreal, and now temporary resident in London, Ontario, Atlass brings the Old World charm of his home and infuses it with stark synth landscapes and enormously empty drums not only creating a name for himself, but also eradicating any notions of a specific genre. Coupled with his dreamy, intensely reverbed vocals and inventive melodies, this young maverick has fashioned quite a unique project few will be prepared for. It's something you have to hear to understand.
"The Black Atlass EP", his first EP released on Green United Music, is a six song teaser of things to come. Even in the relatively brief foray, lasting only 18 minutes, Altlass manages to create a plethora of different productions styles varying from the sample heavy banger "Ways", to the ethereal keys found cascading amidst the synthesizer wails of the Paris Interlude.
One of the most captivating aspects of this young artist can only be appreciated once you have witnessed him performing his special brand of crooning in person. Armed only with awkward personability and his MPD/computer combo, this troubadour sings while re-producing his beats live, to slay any notions of disbelief in regards to his talent. He even takes the process one step further when he records his music and plays each song's instrumental in real time drectly from his MPD. This means when you listen to his music, the instrumental backing you hear accompanying his vocals are not the result of quantized drum patterns and sequencing, but fined tuned precision and enviable musical ability.
Fusing his polarizingly different sound-scape with an undeniable musicality, Black Atlass is definitely an act to look out for in 2012. You should expect to see a couple interesting collaborations with some well-known Toronto area performers before the end of this year.
Something great this way comes.

Black Atlass Lyrics

Your lips take me to California
Your body takes me to the sky
I know I'm fuckin dying for you
So baby give me yours all night
Blue eyes crystal clear
And tan lined freckled fears in you
My only piece and pride is you
II
And I can't stop the motion
And I can't turn back time
And summer time's our love baby
And cherry skies our love
Blue eyes crystal clear
And tan lined freckled fears in you
I want to take that ride
My only piece and pride is you
III
Yeah I'm thinking
Thinking who could she love
Yeah I'm thinking
Thinking who could she love
Yeah I'm thinking
Thinking who could she love
Cause I know baby
When I dream of sunshine or paradise When I dream of living that simple life When I dream of running away tonight
I hear your voice whispering
IV
Cause baby you're my
You're my young west coast
You're my young west coast
And baby you're my
You're my young west coast
And I know baby
I know who I'm thinking of
The song "Blonde" by Black Atlass is an emotive, melodic love song that vaguely touches on the themes of heartbreak, longing, and the intensity of infatuation. The lyrics open with the singer confessing how deeply he is affected by his lover, as he sings: "Your lips take me to California, your body takes me to the sky, I know I'm fuckin dying for you, so baby give me yours all night". The first verse is characterized by the singer's adoration for his lover, accentuated by the almost hallucinogenic imagery of blue eyes, crystal-clear oceans, and freckled fears.
The chorus serves to underscore the theme of timelessness and the inevitability of the singer's love for his lover, no matter the circumstances. He sings, "And I can't stop the motion, and I can't turn back time, and summer time's our love baby, and cherry skies our love". The second verse reiterates the imagery of the first verse, with the singer expressing his desire to be with his lover and "take that ride". The lyrics suggest that his lover is his only source of pride and the most valuable thing in his life.
In the third verse, the singer is undergoing a bout of melancholy, contemplating the possibility of his lover loving someone else. He repeats, "Yeah, I'm thinking, thinking who could she love, 'cause I know baby". The last verse of the song serves as a cathartic declaration of the singer's love for his lover, as he tells her that she is his young west coast, and that he knows who he's thinking of whenever he dreams of paradise or sunshine.
