Flavor Of The Month
Black Sheep Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Second Verse

So you got the fever for the flavor of the other
Chocolate, sasspirilla, or is it you like another
Flavor in my socks
To the curly locks
Black Sheep rollin hard
and kncokin peons out the box
Never have I ever never
ever felt much better
Did the whole nine
on the tenth I was no wetter
Ready and I'm eager
Eager as a beaver
On the radio and good to go
says your receiver
Not to be the baddest
or the oldest nor the wackest
Neither am I needest
or the newest or the blackest
Just a brown fellow
Who's not afraid of Jello
To the people of the world
I would like to say G'day
Had to wait a while
But the while has been waited
Never gave up hope
in myself, nor debated
Didn't shed a tear when I wasn't picked
Cause I got a cone now, want a lick?

Chorus

Third Verse

Now I catch a number
when before I caught a glare
Now I give a pound
when before I got a stare
Now I guess I kinda got it goin on
I get a wake-up call on the lawn
I used to try and push a demo
Now I have a Coupe
That's a bit more than a little
But then not quite a few
Funny how they find you
when they told you get lost
Tell me why you're grittin
when you have no dental floss
Wasn't my loss
Thought you were the boss?
You never knew how much the Sherbert cost
Forget it, I never sweat it
Your girl will give me play I'll wet it
It only happens just because you let it
Now everybody wants to play my phone
I see em with a spoon
I see em with a cone
You never knew I knew it
but I knew you would pursue it
Hurry up and get a scoop before it's gone

Chorus

Overall Meaning

In the second verse of Black Sheep's song "Flavor of the Month," the rapper talks about having a desire for a different flavor, referring to someone who may be interested in someone other than their partner. The allusions to chocolate, sarsaparilla, and other flavors may represent people of different races or backgrounds. The line "flavor in my socks to the curly locks" hints at the idea of interracial relationships, with "flavor in my socks" implying the mixing of different flavors, and "curly locks" suggesting a partner with an afro-textured hairstyle.

The verse also reflects on the rapper's growing success and confidence. He brags about "rolling hard" and "knocking peons out the box." He describes himself as "just a brown fellow" who is not afraid to try new things, including Jello. The lines "never have I ever never, ever felt much better" suggest that he is enjoying his newfound success and attention. He also expresses a sense of resilience, having "never gave up hope in myself, nor debated," even when he was not initially chosen or recognized.

Til this very day that is such a dope way to end a verse. And the double meaning was crazy.

@Jason Stone Hope I am not over explaining, but here it goes....
The entire song is an Double Entendre on it's own.
The title of the song itself is called "Flavor of the Month" which is a known term or euphemism that means to be adored or favored for a short period of time....like a One-Hit-Wonder or a partner you have sex with that one time but had no interest in them afterwords.
The subject matter consist of Dres trying to make a come up in an environment that constantly dismisses him due to superficial reasons.
His talent and craft was undermined, but he persevered none the less, and now he is at the level he worked hard to get to. So the song is simply about striving for success while maintaining your identity.
Bar: Had to wait a while but the while has been waited
But now (or at least at the time) that the spot light is finally on him, his style and talent is being discredited as a short period of great popularity ie Flavor of the Month
Bar: Never gave up hope in myself, nor debated
If you dissect the idea he follows this theme all through out the song.
The analogy he uses with different flavors of Ice Cream is to paint a visual picture to capture different styles that are seen as consumable, Marketable to the mainstream public. sugarcoated. So if you notice, at the intro when Mr. Long lists these different flavors and turns to Dres and asks, "Which flavor are you?" Dres simply replies by not telling Mr. Long his flavor at all, but instead breaks down why he is so different from the rest of the flock. Hence the name of the group Black Sheep which is another term that is a metaphor to explain how they stand out from the rest of the sheep.....but anyway.
The visuals (The video itself) also has a lot of sexual innuendos that mirrored some of the subject matter on the album. Now that Dres has his cone, which is a symbol of his success and even manhood to a certain degree. He taunts his haters and disagreeable critics by asking in a condescending way "Wanna lick?" Basically saying "Fuck all you that doubted me in the first place"
Bar: Didn't shed a tear when I wasn't picked cause I got a cone now, want a lick?

These brothas were far ahead of their time in the game! Dres should be on the top list of any trade as one of the best lyricists of all time! The beats by Mista Lawnge were all original and organic. Pure artful legends here.
