1. Blacklist is a band from Brooklyn, New York comprised of Josh Strawn (vocals, guitar), Ryan Rayhill (bass), Glenn Maryansky (drums), and James Minor (guitar). They are one of the flagship bands of painter Pieter Schoolwerth's Wierd Records imprint. The band creates atmospheric modern rock music that has been described as "anthemic," - The Guardian UK, "darkly romantic," - The Village Voice, and "a much-needed anomaly in NYC's music scene." - Other Music. They are sometimes classified as part of the post-punk revival, though the sound is generally more dense, sonically incorporating elements of shoegaze and heavy metal with coldwave. The members often cite influences like My Bloody Valentine, Motörhead and Black Sabbath alongside bands like The Comsat Angels, Wire, Killing Joke, and The Sound.
Blacklist's first EP was self-released and is currently out of print. The Solidaire EP was then released including a cover of seminal French coldwave band Asylum Party's song "Pure Joy In My Heart." The band's debut LP, Midnight of the Century, was released digitally on May 26th, 2009 and on CD on July 28th, 2009. It was mixed by Ed Buller and mastered by Howie Weinberg. The album title is a reference to the revolutionary Victor Serge's novel, Midnight in the Century.

Daybreak
Blacklist Lyrics

There's something I can't say
I'm a strange new suspect
The devil of the day
Lock step with your pretty face forward
And you walk, you crawl on your knees
Blush back you're so mad and ecstatic
Daybreak sheltered me
Did you find love, find that hit in me?
Well I'm blown away
That you find love
Your violent love in me
I know just what I've seen
So don't tell me what it means
In your twisted language
Opium ain't peace
Lock step with your pretty face forward
And you walk, you crawl on your knees
Blush back you're so mad and ecstatic
And you fall
Daybreak sheltered me
Did you find love, find that hit in me?
Well I'm blown away
That you find love
Your violent love in me
Daybreak sheltered me
Did you find love, find that hit in me?
Well I'm blown away
That you find love
Your violent love in me
The lyrics of Blacklist's song "Daybreak" carry a sense of mysteriousness and darkness. The opening lines convey a hesitancy or inability to express something important. The singer describes themselves as a "strange new suspect," suggesting they may feel guilty or suspicious about their own motives or actions. They refer to themselves as the "devil of the day," implying a sense of inner turmoil or a struggle with their own identity.
The chorus highlights a contrast between the gentle and peaceful nature of daybreak and the aggressive and intense love the singer has experienced. They ask if the person they are addressing has also found love and intensity within them. The use of "violent love" suggests a passion that is both intense and potentially destructive.
The second verse delves deeper into the singer's understanding of the situation. They assert that they know what they have seen and reject any attempts to manipulate or deceive them. They criticize the other person's "twisted language" and suggest that substances like opium can never bring true peace.
Overall, the song explores themes of inner conflict, self-awareness, and the complexities of love. It delves into the darker aspects of passion and the blurred lines between love and obsession.
