Scarey Day Blues
Blind Willie McTell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My good gal got a
mojo, she's tryin' to keep it hid
My gal got a mojo, she's tryin' to keep it hid
But Georgia Bill
got something to find that mojo with
I said she got that mojo and she won't let me see
She got that mojo and she won't let me see
And every time I start to love her she's tried to put that
jinx
on me
Well, she shakes like the Central
and she wobbles like the L&N
She shakes like the Central and she wobbles like the L&N
Well, she's a hot-shot mama and I'm scared to tell her where I been
Said my baby got something, she won't tell her daddy what it is

Said my baby got something, she won't tell her daddy what it is
But when I crawls into my bed, I just can't keep my black stuff still

Overall Meaning

Blind Willie McTell's "Scarey Day Blues" tells the story of a man who is in love with a woman who possesses a magical mojo. The man's lover, however, does not want to reveal the possession of her mojo, and tries to keep it hidden from him. Although he is in love with her, he is reluctant to get too close because he fears the powers of the mojo. Whenever he tries to love her, she puts a jinx on him. McTell describes her shaking like the Central and wobbling like the L&N, possibly referring to the Central of Georgia Railway and the L&N Railroad, two prominent transportation systems in the American South in the early 20th century. He portrays her as a "hot-shot mama" who might be too hot to handle, and the man is scared to tell her where he has been, for fear that she might put a jinx on him.

The song highlights superstitions and beliefs surrounding African American cultural practices of mojo, an object or a substance believed to have supernatural powers that protect or bring good luck. The mojo's power is potent enough to protect its owner from danger, heal and create love interests, but also used to inflict harm on others. The song portrays a conflict between love and fear, where the man is in love with his significant other, but is fearful of her possessing a supernatural power that he cannot comprehend. This conflict of love and fear is a frequent theme in American music and literature.
