Nice Try
Blue Rodeo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Underneath which you commit that dark crime
Look I was there
I watched it all go down
And I still can't believe my eyes
Nice try it's so wild
Nice try it's so wild
Well someone got torched for not doing what they're told
It's like a paid vacation when they change your name
It's like yesterday's news is the same again
And again, and again.....
It's so wild
Again and again
It's so wild
So when you dish the dirt you might as well dish the worst
'Cause no one expects you to tell the truth
And when they turn around they think that
Something must be wrong
'Cause no one could make up a story so far gone
It's so wild
So far gone
It's so wild
Fact or fiction all parties deny
Any involvement at the scene of the crime
They look you cold straight in the eye
And say man
You got the wrong guy
But nice try it's so wild
Nice try it's so wild
The song "Nice Try" by Blue Rodeo is a powerful commentary on the corrupt systems that often exist in society. The lyrics paint a picture of a crime taking place in the bright lights, with the individual committing the crime feeling as though they are protected by the public scrutiny. The singer of the song watched it all go down and sees through the facade that the individual is trying to present. The line "it's like a car burning on the side of the road, well someone got torched for not doing what they're told" gives the impression that the person committing the crime is being punished for not following orders or not staying in line with the established system.
The second verse of the song is even more powerful as it describes the way that society often reacts when something like this happens. The line " 'cause no one could make up a story so far gone" is particularly impactful as it highlights the fact that we are often shocked by the horrible things that happen in the world, but at the same time we are so desensitized by the constant stream of information that we receive that it takes something truly shocking to make us stop and take notice.
The chorus of the song is a repetition of the phrase "nice try it's so wild." This gives the impression that the singer is speaking directly to the individual who committed the crime and is essentially calling them out on their lies and hypocrisy.
Overall, "Nice Try" is a powerful song that highlights the need for truth and transparency in all aspects of society. It challenges us to be more aware of the systems that exist around us and to question them when they do not seem to be working in our best interests.
