Rage
Blue Rodeo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I see that wildness in your eyes
Talking disconnected
Like there's no tomorrow
You know you scare me sometimes
Proud and hollow
That makes a man
Live so close to the edge
Nothing in this world is
He finds no comfort in the other
Any use to you
Into my drunken head
And I know you won't remember
Except these songs you sing
Above this barroom sorrow
A word of this tomorrow
When will you rage again
Or is it enough
Just getting out of your head
Night after night
Or are you running scared
Or you just don't care
Or are you waiting for
That one high and holy sign
To shine a light on you
And pull you through
To the silent true
You say you're gonna put your
Just got to find a drummer
Who understands
We sit in the corner
Old band back together again
People stop to say hi
You say fuck off and die
And I feel like the lucky one
Six pints into this night
And you're just starting
To hit your stride
As you heap abuse
They're all posers or freaks
On every passerby
You say that you and I are
The only two in this bar
That know what it takes
Or is it enough
When will you rage again
Night after night
Or are you running scared
Just getting out of your head
Or you just don't care
Or are you waiting for
That one high and holy sign
To shine a light on you
Pull you through
Shine a light on you
To the silent true
And pull you through
To that one high and holy sign
The song "Rage" by Blue Rodeo portrays the feeling of hopeless hope that comes with watching someone you care about self-destruct. The singer is watching their friend, who is wasted and disconnected, talking like there's no tomorrow. The singer is both scared and proud of their friend's wildness, but is unsure if it is fear or courage driving their behavior. The constant question throughout the song is when or if the friend will rage again - will they find comfort in the other or in something holy? Will they ever come to a silent truth?
As the song continues, we see the friend talking about starting a band and getting back together with old bandmates. They heap abuse on those around them, claiming only they and the singer "know what it takes." The singer notes that they feel lucky to be one of the few people the friend still talks to, but they're unsure if they're enabling their friend's bad behavior or truly helping them.
