Blue Rodeo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Still it's all you ever do
One day the life of the party
Now you haven't a clue
All that was a distant memory
Now you're feelin' so blue
A passing tear still it makes you laugh
As another morning comes too soon
You got your plan you've got it all worked out
You can fool your friends but you won't get far
With that broken heart of yours
Forever lettin' you down
You can't explain it
Might as well get wasted
Every day starts with the promise
This'll be the last time
But come the late night with its sorrows
And you feel like gettin' high
When all the world seems so far away
And you don't care why
Precious sleep is all you really need
But you just can't close your eyes
You got so much love to give
But now it's all just slippin' away
Can't take yourself for another day
With that broken heart of yours
Forever lettin' you down
You can't explain it
Might as well get wasted
You think you're so smart
You got your plan you got it all worked out
You can fool your friends but you won't get far
With that broken heart of yours
Forever lettin' you down
The lyrics to Blue Rodeo's song "Wasted" paint a picture of someone trapped in a cycle of addiction and self-destruction, using drugs or alcohol to escape their pain and loneliness. The opening lines acknowledge that substance use does not bring lasting happiness or fulfillment, but still, it is all the person knows. The refrain repeats the idea that there is no explanation for their behavior, so they might as well continue getting wasted.
The verses provide more details about the person's life and thoughts. They used to be the life of the party and had happy memories, but now they feel lost and alone. They have a broken heart that lets them down and can't explain why they keep turning to drugs or alcohol. The promise to quit the habit is made every day, but it's hard to follow through when the late-night sorrows come back. Even though the person recognizes their need for sleep and love, they can't stop the addiction from taking over their life.
The song is a powerful commentary on addiction and the struggle to break free from it. The lyrics can be interpreted in different ways, depending on the listener's personal experiences, and the haunting melody adds to the emotional impact of the song.
