What Is This Love
Blue Rodeo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That I leave behind
How can I turn
From the tears in your eyes
What is this world
Where we always pretend
That it's worth it
Worth it in the end
What is this life we share
That I just throw away
Is this love
That causes so much pain
What is the promise
That I leave behind
Why can't I
Just lie beside you again
What's going on
How'd it get so wrong
What is this dream
That I'll never find
What is this prayer
That's stealing my mind
What is this deal
That I've made with fate
And I wonder
If I have left it too late
What's going on
How'd it get so wrong
These lyrics convey the confusion and pain that come along with a breakup or departure from a significant other. The first two lines set the tone for the rest of the song, as the singer questions why they are leaving someone with tears in their eyes, and what kind of love could cause such pain. The mention of pretending in the second stanza shows that the breakup wasn't a sudden decision, and that the relationship had turned into a farce as both parties tried to cling to something that wasn't working. The third stanza wonders about the value of the life they shared, and the fourth stanza shows regret and sadness at leaving it behind. The final stanza asks deeper questions about the meaning of life and the inevitability of fate, as the singer wonders if they have left their chance at love and happiness behind and if it's too late to go back.
Overall, Blue Rodeo's "What Is This Love" is a beautifully written song with relatable and poignant lyrics. It captures the pain, confusion, and regret that come with a failed romance, and asks deeper questions about the meaning of love, life, and fate.

I have never understood why USA could never get behind this band. Saw them in Houston once 20 people maybe. Saw them in LA. Maybe 100. Best band Ever.

My boyfriend played this song New Year's Eve and listening to the words made the tears just pour forth from within my entire being.Because it reminded me how very much I luv him and how truly blessed we are to share this journey together no matter how long or short because we have both touched and left an imprint upon each others hearts and soul forever. Our bond and connection is truly a divine blessing and we realized the little things matters not.Unconditional pure love from within all we need

I bet the whole band was floating on air by the time they finished recording this song, a clear example of the whole being more than the sum of the parts - the magic that makes people keep making music together
