Cover Your Tracks
Blue Roses Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Time is slow
My hands are empty
Go home
Years concrete and cold
They stared me down
Avoid town
Hollow and empty
Oh, we searched all night
For a piece of bread
And when it comes
Give it to the birds instead
Today he was here
Holding my arms
All's not lost
Your head's not empty
Come home
Oh we searched all night
For a piece of bread
And then when it comes
Give it to the birds instead
The opening line of "Cover Your Tracks", a song by British singer Blue Roses, is a command for someone to cover their tracks in the snow, as in hiding something they don't want to be discovered. The suggestion is that time moves slowly when one is trying to conceal something. The singer's hands are empty, in contrast, perhaps implying that she isn't actively trying to hide anything. The next line is another imperative, telling the listener to go home, setting the tone for this being a song about leaving things behind. The next lines explore the feeling of being held down by the weight of years, by something concrete and cold, which stared her down. The avoidance of town suggests the weight may come from somewhere external, rather than just being internal. And the final two lines describe the sensation of feeling hollow and empty, almost as if everything is falling apart.
The second verse opens with the same line as the first verse, and the suggestion is that something has indeed been hidden or lost. The "piece of bread" in this case may be literal, but is more likely a metaphor for something that was lost or taken away. It's unclear who is being addressed in this line, but the implication is that they were searching for something (or someone) all night, and they found only birds. The next line suggests that what they found in the end wasn't enough, or wasn't what they wanted or needed. The third line of the verse briefly describes someone holding her arms, perhaps for comfort or support, and the fourth line again urges someone to come home. The repetition of the searching imagery in both verses, and the idea that what was found wasn't enough or was given away to the birds, creates a sense of loss or disappointment. The repeated refrain to come home, however, offers a glimmer of hope or connection.

Leave the scene and hide your trail in the snow
Time is slow
Time seems to be moving slowly
My hands are empty
I have nothing left
Go home
Leave and go back to where you belong
Years concrete and cold
The past is unyielding and harsh
They stared me down
I was judged harshly by others
Avoid town
Stay away from the place where I was judged
Hollow and empty
I feel hollow and devoid of emotions
And falling down
My life is spiraling out of control

We looked for something desperately all night long
For a piece of bread
We were searching for basic survival needs
And when it comes
When we finally find it
Give it to the birds instead
We are willing to sacrifice what we have found to help those who are even worse off than us
Today he was here
Someone was here with me today
Holding my arms
They offered physical support and comfort
All's not lost
There is still hope
Your head's not empty
You are not lacking in intellect or creativity
Come home
Return to a place of comfort and familiarity
