Formed in 19… Read Full Bio ↴Blue Zoo was a British new wave band from 1980 to 1985.
Formed in 1980, their original band name was Modern Jazz, and they released a single "In My Sleep (I Shoot Sheep)" in that year.
Band members were: Mike Ansell on bass, Matthew Flowers (formerly of new wave band "Sore Throat") on keyboards, Pete Lancaster on trumpet, Andy O on vocals, Tim Parry on guitar and Mickey Sparrow on drums. Steve Pond from Inner City Unit played occasional synthesizer. Parry later went on to become a record producer.
Blue Zoo had one UK hit single. In October 1982 "Cry Boy Cry" charted and reached number 13. It stayed on the UK Singles Chart's Top 40 for eight weeks.
They released an album Two By Two - sometimes written-as 2x2 or 2By2 - in 1983.
Another band with the same name formed in Australia in the late nineties. Originally called "Laughing Gas" they changed their name to Blue Zoo and played live venues in and around NSW and the ACT between 1998 and 2006.
Whilst the Australian Blue Zoo never secured a major recording contract, three of their songs may be found on the compilation album Hurricane Healing (Vol 4), recorded to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Their most successful song was the ballad "Only for You", which reached as high as number 3 on US internet charts. Other songs include the edgier "Where Would We Be?", "Pick Yourself Up", "New Groove", and "So Funky I Could Cry".
Band members were: Steve Myers (vocals), Tim Begbie (guitar and vocals), Sandy Meischke (bass, percussion and vocals), Amanda Leach (Drums), Rick Millband (Drums), Dan McLean (Trumpet), Dino Martiniello (Sax), Potsy Webber (Hammond organ, upright bass and vocals), Michael Knight (Drums), and Rob Fontaine (Bass).
The band played their last gig at Old Parliament House in 2006, and these days their songs are enjoyed mostly by family and friends, and the occasional devoted fan who wonders where they went.
Love Moves In Strange Ways
Blue Zoo Lyrics

listens for his footsteps
and looks at the time
a moment of decision
can this go on
and yet he thinks of himself
the will to survive
looks at her face
she silently weeping
when two hearts beat together
love moves in strange ways
he thinks she's a fool
he doesn't listen
they talk about nothing
forget what is said
watch television
when two hearts beat together
love moves in strange ways
love moves in strange ways
ahhhh huhhh
ahhhh huhhh
ahhhh huhhh
as soon past is past
she's finally broken
alone in her room
he cries out in pain
why are you leaving me
when two hearts beat together
love moves in strange ways
love moves in strange ways
love moves in strange ways
when two hearts beat together
love moves in strange ways
love moves in strange ways
love moves in strange ways
The song Love Moves In Strange Ways by Blue Zoo tells the story of a couple whose relationship is falling apart. The female character is waiting for her partner, listening for his footsteps and checking the time. She knows deep down that she may need to make a decision about whether their relationship can continue. Meanwhile, the male character is too caught up in his own needs for survival to pay attention to her, thinking only of himself. They engage in meaningless conversation and distract themselves with television, while their love is slowly slipping away.
The chorus of the song emphasizes how love is a mysterious force that can take hold and lead to unexpected outcomes. The two hearts that once beat together are now disconnected, but their love still persists in a strange and complex way. In the end, the female character decides to leave, and the male character realizes too late the gravity of the situation. He cries out in pain, wondering why she is leaving him.
The song captures the complexity of love and relationships, highlighting how they can be both beautiful and painful. It speaks to the fact that even when we think we have control over our emotions and relationships, love can move in strange and unexpected ways.

These 80's songs bring back more than memories of high school. It brings back the feelings, the joys, the pains, the friends and the laughter. I was young. I looked at the world a whole lot differently than how I see it today. It was like some magical time - inexplicable and yet so hauntingly memorable.
