Currently, the group comprises singer and harmonica player John Popper, guitarist Chan Kinchla, drummer Brendan Hill, bassist Tad Kinchla and keyboardist Ben Wilson. Tad Kinchla and Ben Wilson joined the band following the death of original bassist Bobby Sheehan in 1999.
While Blues Traveler is best known among fans for their improvisational live shows, the general public is most familiar with the group from their Top 40 singles "Run-Around" and "Hook". They gained mainstream popularity after their fourth studio album four, released in 1994. Sheehan's death and Popper's struggle with obesity put a damper on the group's success, and A&M dropped the band in 2002.
Great Big World

See how they run
And when the check doesn't clear
And it's time to pay the bill
Some are gonna ride it out
Some can't and they never will
'Cause it's a great big world calling you to take a ride
Oh yeah a great big world reminding you you're not alone
So hold on this great big world we only get to rent we never get to own
Inches fill a yard stick
Feet slowly walk a mile
Make one move then another
And then you try to live a while
Keep your head and you might make it
But that ain't no guarantee
'Cause it takes debt and obligation
To fly around so free
And it's a great big world calling you to take a ride
And it's a great big world singing come and see and come inside
Oh yeah a great big world reminding you you're not alone
So hold on this great big world we only get to rent we never get to own
Whatcha gonna do first
And where will you make your mark
How are you going to get there
And can you find a place to park
Seasons coming slowly
But still they always come
And then it feels like just a second
And then suddenly you're done
Whatcha gonna do first
And where will you make your mark
Where you gonna go to
Can you find a place to park
Seconds from a pardon
But still you think you won't
And then it feels like it's just seconds
And then suddenly they don't
And it's a great big world reminding you you're not alone
And it's a great big world we only get to rent we never get to own
'Cause it's a great big world calling you to take a ride
And it's a great big world singing come and see and come inside
Oh yeah a great big world reminding you you're not alone
So hold on this great big world we only get to rent we never get to own
Blues Traveler's song "Great Big World" has lyrics that talk about the struggles of life, the fleeting nature of time and the importance of making every moment count. The opening lines, "Gauntlets, thrown one by one, see how they run" suggest that challenges in life come at us one after the other, and the only way to cope is to keep moving forward. The lines, "And when the check doesn't clear, and it's time to pay the bill, some are gonna ride it out, some can't and they never will" speak to the reality that some people are better equipped to face the challenges of life while others crumble under pressure.
The song reminds us that life is temporary, and we should make the most of every moment we have. The lines, "It's a great big world calling you to take a ride, and it's a great big world singing come and see and come inside" emphasize the idea of embracing life and all the adventures it offers. The lyrics also suggest that living life fully comes at a cost, often in the form of obligations and debt. The lines, "But it takes debt and obligation to fly around so free" imply that even though we might strive for freedom, there are always strings attached.
The chorus of the song repeats the message that life is precious, and we are only here for a limited time. The lines, "Whatcha gonna do first and where will you make your mark, how are you going to get there, and can you find a place to park?" suggest that we should have a plan for our lives and take actions to fulfill our goals.
Overall, the lyrics of "Great Big World" acknowledge the difficulties of life but encourage us to keep moving forward and make the most of every moment.

Inches fill a yard stick
Small steps can lead to a greater distance over time
Feet slowly walk a mile
Slowly but surely, we can achieve great things
Make one move then another
One action leads to the next
And then you try to live a while
We attempt to make the most of the time we have
Keep your head and you might make it
If we stay calm and focused, we can overcome obstacles
But that ain't no guarantee
Even if we try our best, success is not always guaranteed
'Cause it takes debt and obligation
There can be a cost to pursuing our dreams and desires
To fly around so free
To live life on our own terms, we may need to make sacrifices
Whatcha gonna do first
What will be your first move?
And where will you make your mark
Where will you leave your impact?
How are you going to get there
What steps will you take to reach your goals?
And can you find a place to park
Will you find a place to rest or pause?
Seasons coming slowly
Time moves in cycles, sometimes painfully slow
But still they always come
But no matter how slow, time still marches on
And then it feels like just a second
Time can fly by in an instant
And then suddenly you're done
Before we know it, time can slip away from us
Seconds from a pardon
Experiencing forgiveness can come at any moment
But still you think you won't
But sometimes we convince ourselves that we're not deserving of forgiveness
And then it feels like it's just seconds
Time can move at different speeds, depending on our perspective
And then suddenly they don't
Time can be unpredictable and fleeting

Bobby Sheehan was criminally underrated as a bassist... holy shit.
