During 1970 and 1971, Wailer, Marley and Tosh worked with renowned reggae producers Leslie Kong and Lee "Scratch" Perry.
They released four albums before signing to Island Records in 1972. Two more albums were created before Tosh and Wailer left the band in 1974, citing grievances over label treatment and ideological differences. Marley carried on with a new line-up, including the I-Threes that put out seven more more albums. Marley died in 1981.
The Wailers were a groundbreaking ska and reggae group, noted for songs such as "Simmer Down", "Trenchtown Rock", "Nice Time", "War", "Stir It Up" and "Get Up, Stand Up".

Bob Marley & The Wailers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
Dem set me free again
Yes, me friend, me friend
Me deh 'pon street again
The bars could not hold me;
Force could not control me now.
They try to keep me down
Yes, I've been accused
Wrongly abused now
But through the powers of the Most High
They've got to turn me loose
So don't try to cold me up on this bridge, now.
I've got to reach Mount Zion
The highest region.
So if you a bull-bucka,
Let me tell you this:
I'm a duppy conqueror - conqueror.
Yes, me friend, me good friend
Dem set me free again, mm
Yes, me friend
Dem turn me loose again
Don't try to show off
You make your friend dem laugh
For I will cut you off
And I will take the laughs off
I'm crying
Yes, me friend
We deh a street again
Yes, me friend, me friend, me friend
Dem set me free again
Bars could not hold me
The song "Duppy Conquerer" by Bob Marley is a powerful song about overcoming obstacles and coming out on top. The lyrics speak to the idea of being falsely accused and wrongly abused, but through the power of the Most High (referring to God), the singer is able to overcome and be set free again. The bars that once held the singer are no longer effective, and even force is unable to control him.
The singer expresses a determination to reach Mount Zion, which refers to a place of ultimate freedom and peace. He declares himself a "duppy conqueror" which means he is someone who has overcome adversity and conquered his enemies. Even though some people may try to bring him down or show off in front of him, the singer remains confident and focused on his goal.
Overall, the lyrics celebrate the resilience and strength of the human spirit, and the idea that even in the face of adversity, we can rise up and overcome.
