Mack The Knife
Bobby Darin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear
And it shows them pearly white
Just a jackknife has old MacHeath, babe
And he keeps it, ah, out of sight
You know when that shark bites with his teeth, babe
Scarlet billows start to spread
Fancy gloves, oh, wears old MacHeath, babe
So there's never, never a trace of red

Now on the sidewalk, huh, huh, whoo sunny morning, un huh
Lies a body just oozin' life, eek
And someone's sneakin' 'round the corner
Could that someone be Mack the Knife?

There's a tugboat, huh, huh, down by the river don'tcha know
Where a cement bag's just a-drooppin' on down
Oh, that cement is just, it's there for the weight, dear
Five'll get ya ten, old Macky's back in town
Now did ya hear 'bout Louie Miller? He disappeared, babe
After drawin' out all his hard-earned cash
And now MacHeath spends just like a sailor
Could it be our boy's done somethin' rash?

Now Jenny Diver, ho, ho, yeah, Sukey Tawdry
Ooh, Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Oh, the line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky's back in town

I said Jenny Diver, whoa, Sukey Tawdry
Look out to Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Yes, that line forms on the right, babe

Now that Macky's back in town
Look out, old Macky's back

Overall Meaning

"Mack the Knife" is a song written by Bertolt Brecht in collaboration with composer Kurt Weill for their 1928 musical, The Threepenny Opera. The song was later popularized by Bobby Darin in his 1958 version. The song’s lyrics describe a notorious criminal named Mack the Knife, also known as Mackie Messer in the German original, and his crimes. The lyrics are a witty and ironic account of Mackie’s outlaw behavior and his increasing fame despite his violent nature.

The song’s opening lines describe the sharp teeth of a shark and how they appear pearly white when the shark shows them. These lines are then linked to Mackie’s sharp jackknife, which is kept out of sight. The chorus then suggests that the consequences of Mackie’s actions are felt throughout society, as evoked by the “scarlet billows” that start to “spread” when he attacks. The later verses continue with the song’s grim tone, describing Mackie’s murders and his more personal vices, such as womanizing and gambling.

The song illustrates the character of Mackie as a charming and charismatic criminal figure, and also portrays the inner workings of corrupted society. The song employs a biting sarcasm that both chastises and celebrates the moral ambiguity of its central character. The song has since been reinterpreted by numerous artists around the world, in various genres including jazz, pop, and rock.

This song is genius. It's cleverly written to where you know exactly what's happening, but it doesn't say "death", "blood", "kill", or any of those words. It tells a few victim stories and lists other victims while maintaining an enticing air of class.

@debrawingo8060

The women are named in the song because they were lining up to help him spend the money he killed for.

@heaven7360

"scarlet billows"

@dragonmeddler2152

I remember when this was a huge free world hit, WLS Chicago would only play an instrumental version...

@charmyzard

@heaven "a body just oozing life."

@oldmech619

I didn’t understand the song until tonight. Macky was kinda real fun loving bad ass killer. Real life of Jack Sheppard (1702–24) Looks like he lived hard and died young.

Bobby knew his time was limited due to his heart condition. He crammed everything he had into life. This guy is the tops when it comes to entertainment.

@brianjones7660

true story...Bobby D is the ONLY guy that Sammy ever warned his agent to NEVER schedule him on the same bill in Vegas, especially right after him. He said Bobby was the best entertainer he ever saw!
Thats some serious respect.

@brianjones7660

schedule him WITH...my edit :P

@matticchio

It wouldn't have been so limited if he had taken penicillin before dental work like the doctor ordered. He may have been depressed toward the end.
