He eventually learned the trumpet and performed at the beginning of his career with Pee Wee Russel and Teddy Roy in Boston. He turned professional on trumpet a short time later - whereby he played guitar parallel thoughout his entire career - and took over the band of Herbie Marsh.
Hackett went to New York in 1937 where he replaced Eddie Condon in Joe Marsala's band, and was celebrated as the new star soloist. He appeared with his own bands in various clubs on 52nd Street, the stamping ground of New York jazz musicians.
Alongside Bix Beiderbecke, his greatest idol, Hackett was regarded as the most important representative of the Dixieland era, and also influenced musicians who had turned to Modern Jazz. Bobby Hackett died of a heart attack on the 7th June, 1976 in Chatham, Massachusetts.

Bobby Hackett Lyrics

I'm somewhere in another world, alone with you
Sharing all the joys we used to know
Many moons ago
Once again your face comes back to me
Just like the theme of some forgotten melody
In the album of my memory
It seems like only yesterday
The small cafe, a crowded floor
And as we danced the night away
I hear you say forever more
And then the song became a sigh
Forever more became goodbye
Cause you remained in my heart, but
Tell me darling in there still a spark?
Or only lonely ashes of the flame we knew
Should I go on whistling in the dark,
Serenade in blue
The lyrics of Bobby Hackett's song, Serenade in Blue, are a poignant reflection on lost love and nostalgic memories. When he hears the serenade, he is transported back to a time when he was with his loved one, sharing happiness and joy. He imagines her face coming back to him, like a forgotten melody from the past. He recalls a small cafe, a crowded floor, and dancing the night away, promising to be together forever. But time has passed, and the song became a sigh, and forevermore became goodbye. Although she has remained in his heart, he wonders if there is still a spark of their love or only lonely ashes. Should he continue to hold onto the ghost of their love, whistling in the dark with the Serenade in Blue?
The lyrics resonate with anyone who has loved and lost. The Serenade in Blue represents everything that was beautiful and pure in their relationship, and the memories it evokes are bittersweet. The song speaks to the power of music and how it has the ability to transport us to another place and time. The theme of forgotten melodies and memories is a recurrent theme in this song, and it is a reminder of the transience of life.
