Auld Lang Syne
Boney M (Holiday) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

We twa hae run aboot the braes
And pou'd the gowans fine
We've wander'd mony a weary foot
Sin' auld lang syne

We two hae paidled i' the burn
Frae mornin' sun till dine
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne

And here's a hand, my trusty friend
And gie's a hand o' thine
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne

We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

Overall Meaning

The song Auld Lang Syne is a widely known traditional Scottish folk song, which has become synonymous with New Year's Eve and is sung globally every year when the clock strikes midnight. The song's message is reflective, nostalgic and speaks of the passing of time, the nature of friendship and the idea that we should remember and appreciate those who have been a part of our lives in the past, even though we may not see them anymore. The song's opening lines ask whether we should forget old acquaintances and the days gone by but the chorus suggests otherwise. It invites us to raise a glass to old friends and past memories and to hold these dear in our hearts.

The song goes on to use imagery to describe fond memories shared between two people who have gone their separate ways but who still hold each other dear. They have run through the hills together, picking flowers and walked many miles with one another. They have splashed through streams and although they are now separated by great distances, their memories bind them.

I grew up listening to this entire album at Christmas time. I found it in my mother's LP collection and listened to it non-stop. I still get so many great memories when I hear the songs from it. I honestly think Boney M were ahead of their time in music with the production of this beautiful album.

Me too man, me too. Iโ€™ve never liked other versions of Christmas songs, even the original versions because I grew up listening to the Boney M versions.
