I listened to a 1968 interview w Louis Armstrong and he made a good point about musicians. When asked about technique that is prevalent among many hard core jazz musicians Louis said that these musicians play for each other to impress each other. Louis also said that these musicians don’t buy tickets to your show. Louis Armstrong said there were only two types of music…good and bad. Louis played to please people and leave them feeling good. Bostic was among that caliber of musicians. He played music that made you feel good.

At this time juncture, Earl Bostic was certainly the Boss of alto saxophone when it was a question of danceable swing Jazz.

He seemed to have had a penchant for up-beat rhythmic flow, and 'hi-lite' Jive and merriment.

Clifford Scott, Louis Jordan, Herman Riley and Peagler (1st name?) were also alto saxophone professionals.

Thanks for the post!

I think even today you would be hard-pressed to find someone who played as well as Earl Bostic (2021)
