When We Die
Bowling for Soup Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know that it's early
And it's too hard to think
And the broken empty bottles, a reminder in the sink
But I thought that I should tell you
If it's not too late to say
I can put back all the pieces
They just might not fit the same
There's nothing worth losing
Especially the chance to make it right
And I know that we're gonna be fine
And the tattooed mistakes are gonna fade over time
As long as we live and time passes by
And we won't get it back when we die

I know it's been years now
And I don't look the same
And the hopes and dreams you had for me you thought went down the drain
And the room looks so empty where my pictures used to be
And I can't say that I blame you
But you can't blame me

There's nothing worth losing
Especially the chance to make it right
And I know that we're gonna be fine
And the tattooed mistakes are gonna fade over time
As long as we live and time passes by
And we won't get it back when we die

Come over come over 'cause I gotta know
If I am doing this all on my own
Come over come over how can I tell you if you're not here?
And I know that we're gonna be fine
And the tattooed mistakes are gonna fade over time
As long as we live and time passes by
And we won't get it back when we die

And I know that we're gonna be fine
And the tattooed mistakes are gonna fade over time
As long as we live and time passes by
We won't get it back when we die

Come over come over whoa-oh-oh
Come over come over whoa-oh-oh
Come over come over

I gotta know

Won't get it back when we die
I know that it's early

Overall Meaning

"When We Die" by Bowling for Soup is a song that speaks to the idea of not letting the past hold you back from making amends and moving forward. The first verse acknowledges the difficulty of facing a situation head-on and potentially having to confront past mistakes. The imagery of broken bottles in the sink serves as a reminder of past wrongs, but the singer still wants to make amends by putting the pieces back together, even if they won't fit perfectly. The chorus emphasizes how important it is to take advantage of the opportunities to make things right, because once we're gone, we can't get those chances back.

The second verse addresses the weight of the past and how it can seem like there's no going back, no fixing what's been done. The singer recognizes that they may not look or act the way their loved one may have hoped, but they can't be solely blamed either. The line "But you can't blame me" speaks to the idea of taking responsibility for one's own mistakes and not holding unrealistic expectations for others.

The bridge of the song is a plea for reconciliation. The singer wants to work things out, but can't do it alone. The repetition of "Come over come over" signals a sense of urgency and desire for connection.

Overall, "When We Die" is a call to action to make the most of the time we have, to not let past mistakes or regrets hold us back, and to prioritize healing and reconciliation when possible.

Seeing that Bowling For Soup is, for some part, a comedy band, and the fact that such an emotionally powerful song came from them, that just makes it even more powerful!

I don’t see them as a comedy band! They’re a legit pop punk band and I love like every song from them, they’re so relatable

@SigfriedBigcheeseVanMemelordII

Brandon x22 'my Wena is lonely tonight, she cries when I turn out the light'. I think they're pretty much a comedy band lol

Ceri Jones exactly! Like the songs Almost and Emily. They got some funny lyrics sometimes but they’re the realest band Ik

14 years later and I still listen to this. Great song. It will always resonate with me because it came out just before my dad died. Lee Majors gives a great performance as the dad in the video.

These guys may be considered a "comedy band" but they can certainly write a touching song when they want to.

@palletbitch

hell yeah

@WhateverWhenever888-ut6uf

They aren’t a comedy band! I hate how people refer to BWS as a comedy band when they aren’t, they’re a legitimate punk band with so much musical talent and relatable lyrics.
