After winning the 2009 Unearthed competition, they gained a performance spot at the Australasian music festival Homebake. In 2010, Tim's brother Jon Hart joined the band as an official member; contributing vocals, mandolin, banjo and keyboards. They toured Australia opening for Angus and Julia Stone as a three-piece, with Tarasenko and Hart in London playing in Laura Marling's backing band. In May 2010, Boy & Bear released their debut extended play, With Emperor Antarctica. They then recorded the song "Fall at Your Feet" for He Will Have His Way, a tribute album to singer-songwriter brothers, Tim and Neil Finn. Boy & Bear's version of "Fall at Your Feet" was listed at No. 5 on the Triple J Hottest 100, 2010. Another of their tracks, "Rabbit Song" was placed at No. 45.
In November 2010, their cover of "Fall at Your Feet" peaked at No. 34 on the ARIA Singles Chart. On 5 August 2011, Boy & Bear released their debut album Moonfire. It was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee with producer, Joe Chiccarelli and reached No. 2 on the ARIA Albums Chart. In December, it had finished third in the Triple J album poll of 2011. On the Triple J Hottest 100, 2011 Boy & Bear were listed three times, "Part Time Believer" and "Milk & Sticks" at No. 50 and No. 49, respectively. While "Feeding Line" reached No. 4. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2011 Boy & Bear won in five categories: Breakthrough Artist – Single for "Feeding Line"; and Album of the Year, Best Group, Breakthrough Artist – Album and Best Adult Alternative Release for Moonfire.
In late 2012, the band announced that they had parted ways with Tarasenko. His replacement was Dave Symes, formerly of Seeker Lover Keeper and of Sarah Blasko's live backing band.
Boy & Bear released their second album on 16 August 2013, titled Harlequin Dream. It debuted at #1 on the ARIA charts. Two singles were released from the album - "Southern Sun" and "Three-Headed Woman."

Boy & Bear Lyrics

We're begging on the feeding line
We're lifting out above this head space
See my body overflows
But I got my whole damn life
Caught up in moments entirely of yours
But I'm finding it harder to reason in order to grow
Know, know
See my body keeps in line
And I got my whole damn life
Oh I want to be somebody, somebody, someone
You're so desperate now
No, you won't let it go
But you bit off your tongue to become one
And nevertheless when this pain in my chest seems to grow
I'm living it harder to feel what it feels like to know
You know, know, know
In the home I lived in I came to grow
My body's cumbersome and it's slow
But I felt it felt it coming over me
But I felt it felt it coming over me
I got my whole damn life
Caught up in moments entirely of yours
I'm finding it harder to reason in order to grow
And finding it hard is a feeling that all of you know
Nevertheless, when this pain in my chest seems to grow
And you know
You know, know, know
In "Feeding Line," Boy & Bear expresses the feeling of being caught between the desire to belong and the longing to be an individual. The lyrics depict the struggle of being part of a group and trying to find one's own path. The song's first few lines are about moving to the rhythm and being in sync with others as they beg for sustenance. The mention of "lifting out above this headspace" suggests that they are trying to rise above their current situation. The lyrics "see my body overflows" hints that despite the struggle, the singer still has plenty to give.
The singer is caught between two worlds in this song - being a part of a group and being a unique individual. The lyrics "Caught up in moments entirely of yours" suggests that the singer is losing their sense of self and their identity is being subsumed by the group. However, they recognize that they need to find their own reasons to grow and become somebody. The lyrics "But I'm finding it harder to reason in order to grow / And finding it hard is a feeling that all of you know" express the difficulties of going against the norm and the anxiety of being different.
The last section of the song suggests that the singer has found a home and is willing to grow at their own pace. The lyrics "My body's cumbersome and it's slow / But I felt it felt it coming over me" suggest that growth is taking place, but it's not fast or easy. The song ends with the singer's recognition of the pain they are facing, but they still hold on to the hope of growing.
