Best Kept Secret
Braves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No I never shoulda let you in
Got me six feet in
Now you're living underneath my skin
I'm your Skeleton

You're the ache in my bones
Don't you never ever ever leave me alone?
Eat me up turn me to oxygen
You're my pathogen

You'll believe me when I whisper it
You're my best kept secret

When I'm in chains would you swallow the key?
Now I know, you're not what I want
You're just what I need
Got me enslaved, and it's heavenly
Now I know you're not what I want
You're just what I need, what I need

Drink me down to the marrow
While you haunt my throne
Like a dog in your temple
You make me tremble

You're the salt in my wound
I'm immune to your needle and your my spoon

Hang me up in ur gallows
And enjoy the show

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Braves’s song “Best Kept Secret” depict a tumultuous relationship with someone who has become the singer’s “Skeleton” and “pathogen,” someone who has taken over their existence and infected them to the point where they can’t live without them. The line “Got me six feet in” could refer to being buried alive, suffocating under the weight of this person's presence in their life. Despite this caustic relationship, the singer feels an intense attraction and dependence to this person, as evidenced by the line “You're just what I need, what I need.” The singer knows that this relationship is not a healthy one, but they still feel trapped and unable to leave, as “Got me enslaved and it's heavenly.”

The lyrics paint a vivid picture of codependency, with the singer’s addiction to this person being so strong that they would even ask them to swallow the key if they were in chains. The relationship is compared to being chained, being in gallows, being haunted on a throne, and being infected with a pathogen. The person is an “ache in my bones,” “salt in my wound,” and “dog in your temple” – they have infiltrated every aspect of the singer’s being, and they relish in the torment they inflict.

Despite the toxic nature of this relationship, there’s a sense of twisted romance to the lyrics. It’s almost as if the singer enjoys being hurt, as long as it’s by this person, their “best kept secret.” The singer is trapped, but they also seem to be reveling in their captivity.

This loss set the Pirates back about 20 years.

This loss sent the Pirates organization into permanent irrelevance, minus about a 3-year window in the mid 2010's.

Judging by that pathetic effort against Baez, they are still nowhere near being relevant. How can you not cover the bag?

As a pirates fan... it’s sad to admit their the laughingstock of the NL. I honestly think the Marlins are better. It’s sad because we are not gonna be good for a very long time

As of 2019, they're STILL very much set back. Yeah they might have had a very brief period from 2013-2015 where they put together good seasons and clinched 3 straight wild card berths but from 2016 on they went back to the same old sucky ways. Who knows if or when they'll ever be really good again like the 1970's or the early 1990's.

Randy Marsh can’t have a tight strike zone?

@ADEAL918 - Yeah, this is one of the greatest moments I've ever experienced as a Braves fan, but I have to admit that ball four to Berryhill was a strike for almost ANY other umpire. Hell, even Berryhill thought it was a strike.
