David Gates (guitar, keyboards, bass and vocals) and Jimmy Griffin (guitar and vocals) formed the group in 1968, adding Robb Royer (guitar, bass and vocals of Pleasure Faire) before signing to Elektra Records. Bread, the band's debut album as a trio, was a failure. The band became a quartet beginning with their second album, On The Waters, bringing in Mike Botts as permanent drummer. This time their efforts quickly established Bread as a major act, hitting the mainstream with the #1 hit "Make It With You" in 1970. Bread began touring and recording the 1971 album titled Manna, which included their most enduring hit, "If."
Royer left the group after three albums to pursue other interests. He was replaced by Larry Knechtel (keyboards, bass, guitar, harmonica), a top session player from the Los Angeles scene. Knechtel's credits included records by Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, The Mamas and the Papas, The Monkees, Jan and Dean, Johnny Rivers and Simon & Garfunkel. In 1972 Bread released the highly successful album titled Baby I'm-a Want You, followed by another hit album, Guitar Man. Tensions existed between Gates and Griffin, however. Elektra had been invariably choosing Gates' songs for the A-sides of the singles; Griffin felt that the singles should have been split between the two, however.
By 1973 the band members sensed that they had taken Bread as far as they could, so they disbanded. Gates and Griffin then began solo careers, with mixed results. After reuniting in 1976, Bread released the album Lost Without Your Love in January 1977. The title track was the band's last top-ten hit, peaking at number 9 on the singles chart. The comeback album was also RIAA-certified Gold®.

What A Change
Bread Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's my only dream
Dream it every night
It's about a girl who makes the waters still
Takes my troubled mind
And makes it all seem right
Oh what a change, what a change that would be
Maybe it's strange, strange to say
But I can't remember how
How it used to be.
You could be the answer or another dream
Just another dream
How will I know
I'm afraid to wake up now and face the day
Comes the light of day
She'll have to go or stay
Oh what a change, what a change that would be
Just to wake and find you still here,
'Cause every time, time before
When I open up my eyes
You always disappear.
We could sit and hope that you'll be seen
We could talk about the world and in between,
And when the morning light was through
Then I could see if it was really you.
The lyrics to Bread's song "What A Change" seem to be about a person who is dreaming about finding someone who can bring calm and stability to their life. The singer of the song is experiencing loneliness and troubled thoughts, but through their dream, they have found solace in the idea of a girl who can make everything seem right. The singer longs for this change to become a reality and expresses their desire to wake up and find this girl still there. However, they also express their fear of waking up and realizing that she was just another dream.
The song suggests that the singer's dream is recurring and that the girl represents an answer to their persistent loneliness. The singer seems to be struggling with the reality of their life and the idea of having to face the day without the comfort of this dream. The lyrics also hint at the possibility that the girl may be real and that the singer could potentially find her in the world outside of their dream. The song ends on a hopeful note of possibility, with the idea that if they keep searching, they may find the girl who has been making their dreams more bearable.
Overall, "What A Change" is a song about longing for change and finding comfort in dreams. The lyrics suggest that even the idea of change can make a significant difference in someone's life, even if that change is just the hope of finding someone who can provide stability and comfort.

on Lost Without Your Love
Lost and all alone
I always thought that I could make it on my own
But since you left I hardly make it through the day
My tears get in the way, and I need you back to stay
I wonder through the night
And search the world for the words to make it right
All I want is the way it used to be
With you here close to me
And I've got to make you see,
That I'm lost with out your love
Life without you isn't worth the trouble of
I'm as helpless as a ship without a wheel,
A touch without a feel
I can't believe its real
And someday soon I'll wake and find my heart won't have to break
Yes, I'm lost with out your love
Life without you isn't worth the trouble of
All I want is just the way it used to be
I need you here with me
Oh darling can't you see,
If we had love before we can have it back once more
