Zane and Hamish formed Breaks Co-Op in Auckland, releasing the electronic album Roofers in 1997 before they both left New Zealand to travel and pursue other interests. They both ended up in the UK where Zane has become a hugely successful Radio DJ and TV Presenter.
After several years hiatus, Zane and Hamish eventually started working on new material in 2004, recruiting Andy Lovegrove from artist/producers The Away Team after hearing a demo of him sing and deciding his was the voice born to sing their music.
Released last year in New Zealand, The Sound Inside has been a double-platinum selling hit, with lead single The Otherside the No.1 airplay hit of 2005 and winner of Song Of The Year at the NZ Music Awards.
The Co-op has also been touring for much of the last six months and has relocated to the UK where their album has been released by Parlophone. The live band has been going from strength to strength and gathering fans wherever it goes.
The live lineup is Andy Lovegrove on lead vocals and guitar, Rodney Fisher on vocals, lead guitar, mandolin and percussion, Rio Hemopo on bass and vocals, Tom Atkinson on drums and Hamish Clark on turntables, samples and vocals.
Lay Me Down
Breaks Co-Op Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm a lay me down
When we meet and I rest my weary feet
I'm a lay me down
So hold me close I can see the holy ghost
Who will lay me down
Lay me down
Lay me down
So all my friends who have made it to the end
Will you lay me down
Lay me down
The time has come there is nowhere left to run
And they'll lay me down
Lay me down
Lay me down
The lyrics to Breaks Co-Op's song "Lay Me Down" are open to interpretation, but they seem to express a sense of weariness and acceptance of mortality. The first line suggests that the earth and the world are old and getting cold, which could be a metaphor for the singer feeling worn out and disconnected from the world. They then say that they're going to lay down, which could be interpreted as a desire to rest and find peace.
The second verse seems to address someone who the singer will meet and who will help them find that peace. The line "hold me close I can see the holy ghost" suggests that this person will bring the singer closer to a spiritual or transcendent experience, which will ultimately lead to them being laid down.
The chorus repeats the phrase "Lay me down" multiple times, adding a sense of finality and inevitability to the song. The last verse seems to be addressing the singer's friends, who will be the ones to lay them down when the time comes. The final repetition of "Lay me down" feels like a final surrender to the cycle of life and death.
Overall, "Lay Me Down" is a melancholic but ultimately peaceful song about facing the end of life with acceptance and grace.
