Derek. I once spoke with him on the phone.
Here's the story: He was playing a bar restaurant in Dearborn, MI, and in between sets he came out and set up a table on the dance floor to peddle his CDs.
I bought a copy of "Closer To It", and the first time I played it at home, I discovered an audio drop-out(silence) less than 30 seconds into the first song.
I got the manufacturers address, and sent the disc back to them requesting that they go back and look at the tape used during the making of this CD.
A few weeks later, in the mail came a replacement copy of "Closer To It", the UK edition, with 2 extra songs.
A note from Brian was enclosed that contained an apology, and he hoped this replacement would suffice.
On the letterhead was the phone # of his production company's office.
Eager to call & render my gratitude, I dialed, & who should answer but Brian himself.
I had dialed his personal cell phone.
We had a very cordial talk & he remembered the CD with the glitch.
He told me that he even went to his engineer and had the engineer review the tape that was used in the manufacturing process.
The tape was OK, & it looks like it was just a bad burn on that particular disc.
About 2(?)years later, he came back to the Detroit area & I was in the audience that night, to see another great show.
Afterward, he came out to the lobby of the club to sign stuff.
As he was signing my ticket stub, I recounted my story of our phone call & the defective CD, & he remembered the situation.
I got to thank him personally for replacing that disc, and it was better than the actual show.
We also agreed that "Season Of The Witch" is one of the best 2-chord jam songs of all time.
It's good to meet your heroes.

Absolutely one of greatest organ solos ever, bar none. Note perfect, sublime phrasing. Mullen's guitar solo that follows is the epitome of taste and musicality. They don't make 'em like this anymore....from a day when musicians were real and played like humans, not machines. Lets not forget brilliant drummer Robbie McIntosh (RIP), whose groove was totally unique and inimitable, and the soulful Alex Ligertwood, vocalist extraordinaire. All pure magic, and this entire record is a classic.

@USAtoElsewhere

And Brian is totally self trained.

First heard this on nation-wide FM radio while in college in Poland. Recorded it on two-track tape deck off the radio, listenened to it hundreds of times 'till the oxide on the tape literally wore out. Migrated to the US, looked for the vinyl LP for a bunch of years, finally found the CD reissue online. A few years later Brian Auger came to Boulder, Colorado. Had to see 'im live. The show was terrific, though the personnel changed a lot (Karma Auger - Brian's son - on drums, killer!!). During intermission I grabbed ahold of Mr. Auger in the lobby and introduced myself, told him the significance of his music to a guy who grew up behind the Iron Curtain, and what an honor it was to finally meet him in person. He was most gracious and astonished that a fan from Eastern Europe loyally followed him over the years to the other side of the world... I timidly asked him if they in their current setup still did the Freedom Jazz Dance, and he said. "Yes, we'll do it in the second set after the intermission." When they got back on stage, Mr. Auger grabbed a mic and announced, "This next number we'll play per request from a good friend and a long time fan from Poland who had heard us first time way back while he still lived behind the Iron Courtain. It's only fitting that Freedom is what we always cherish and this song a celebration of it and of the special meaning it has for those who might not have had it as their birthright." Choked me up... The crowd cheered and applauded, the band played it like they were on fire (Brian's daugter sang), I bawled into my beer....

@mrmusic248 Sounds like my personal impression of the man when I met him was right on the money: a kind, thoughtful and eminently approachable gentleman, definitely old-school personality who appreciates his fans - and a killer organ player. Let's cherish his kind while they're still going strong...

This is how I found Brian Auger to be when I had the chance to meet him & talk with him (Father's Day 1999) . Fitting as his
son was accompanying him on drums . Had been a fan for years, but when his music began to be aired on KBCA, Los Angeles' jazz station I figured he might be living in the greater LA area , and remained watchful for the opportunity to see
him perform . Long live Brian Auger !

@WELLBRAN

Brian Auger spans so many decades needs to be recognised more as one of the giants in music

@jonathanb.8791

This was my favorite tune on Miles Davis' classic album, "Miles Smiles," but Auger totally holds his own with this version. Reimagined to great effect. None of my friends "got" this album, so it was a private pleasure of mine.
