Driving Me Backwards
Brian Eno/John Cale/Kevin Ayers/Mike Oldfield/Nico And The Soporifics/Robert Wyatt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Doo doo doo doo doo doo dah
I'll be there.

Oh driving me backwards
Kids like me
Gotta be crazy
Moving me forwards

You must think that I'm lazy
Meet my relations
All of them
Grinning like facepacks
Such sweet inspirations

Curl me up
A flag in an icecap
Now I've found a sweetheart
Treats me good just like an armchair
I try to think about nothing

Difficult
I'm most temperamental
I gave up my good living

Typical
I'm almost sentimental
Ah luana's black reptiles

Sliding around
Make chemical choices
And she responds as expected
To the only sound
Hysterical voices
And you, you're driving me backwards

Kids like me have gotta be crazy I, I, I, I, I, I, I
Doo doo doo dodoo dodah I'll be there

Overall Meaning

"Driving Me Backwards" is a song that captures some of the essence of the strange, obscure side of 1970s British rock. At its core, the song is about feeling directionless and lost – it captures the aimlessness and frustration of a generation that wasn't quite sure where it was going. The opening lines of the song, "Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh/ Doo doo doo doo doo doo dah/ I'll be there," set the tone for what is to come – a mix of confusion, resignation, and a hint of hope.

The song tells the story of a person who feels like they are constantly being pushed forward without any sense of purpose or direction. They see themselves as lazy, but in reality, they are simply lost. The line "Now I've found a sweetheart/ Treats me good just like an armchair," could be read as either a positive development or a sign of giving up – it all depends on the listener's interpretation. The song also introduces the character of Luana, who is surrounded by "black reptiles." While it's not entirely clear who or what Luana is, her presence in the song feels ominous and foreboding.

Overall, "Driving Me Backwards" is a song that captures a moment in time when uncertainty and confusion were the norm. The lyrics are surreal and fragmented, and the music reflects this sense of disorientation.

a tremendous thanks to you blinky-san. I got this album 36 years ago as a cutout and although I love Eno et al, the tracks featuring Mr. Ayers were spellbinding. and they still are. spontaneous astral projection occurs whenever the ethereal sounds of Mr. Oldfield's guitar interprets one of the singular blues tunes penned by Mr. Ayers. Thanks so much. It had been too long since I heard this.

Barbro Traff

This album has been one of my favourites through the years. I wish more people would have listened to it!
