I'll Believe It When I See It
Brian McComas Lyrics

You say that I'm the one

Call me the chosen son

It's all as good as done

The choice is mine to make

But I've lived enough to see

That nothin' comes for free

So how can you prove to me

It's worth the chance I'll take

Yeah you can talk the talk

But can you show me that you're able

When you wanna walk the walk

That you can bring it to the table

I'll believe it when I see it

Can't just say it, got to be it

Who you are and claim to be

Don't always seem the same to me

Yeah it's more than empty words

That we've all already heard

You say you can guarantee it

I'll believe it when I see it

Yeah

A time or two before

When I've walked through your door

I've expected so much more

But back then I was blind

Now I know your kinda tricks

I've seen your politics

So I won't be so quick

To let you change my mind

You think you can make a promise

And expect me to believe

Well call me a doubting Tomas

But I'm stickin' to my creed

I'll believe it when I see it

Can't just say it, got to be it

Who you are and claim to be

Don't always seem the same to me

Cause it's more than empty words

That we've all already heard

You say you can guarantee it

I'll believe it when I see it

Yeah

Oh yeah

You think you can make a promise

And expect me to believe

Well call me a doubting Tomas

But I'm stickin' to my creed

I'll believe it when I see it

Can't just say it, got to be it

What you are and claim to be

Don't always seem the same to me

Yeah it's more than empty words

That we've all already heard

You think you can guarantee it

I'll believe it when I see it

I'll believe it when I see it

Can't just say it, got to be it

Who you are and claim to be

Don't always seem the same to me

Yeah it's more than empty words

That we've all already heard

You think you can guarantee it

I'll believe it when I see it

When I see it, yeah

Yeah you gotta show me

Oh yeah

Oh you gotta show me

Overall Meaning

In "I'll Believe It When I See It," Brian McComas expresses his skepticism towards someone who repeatedly makes promises but fails to deliver. The person in question claims that McComas is the chosen son and that he has what it takes to make it big, but McComas has learned that nothing in life comes for free. He has become disillusioned with the individual's empty words, which sound good on the surface but lack any real, substantive meaning. He insists that actions must speak louder than words, and he's not going to take any more chances or believe blind promises.

The song's theme is caution over rash decision-making. McComas has been burned before in the past and is no longer willing to give up on what he believes in and dreams about just because someone says they have the solution. Although he is hopeful that the individual's claims are true, he is also wise enough to know that talk is cheap and that time will tell whether or not the individual can deliver on their promises. His refusal to be blinded by false promises serves as a life lesson to all of us to be cautious before jumping into something headfirst.
