I've enjoyed many versions but never heard this, Britten's own recording. The shock is the dance like first movement ... almost Tchaikovsky in its rythms. Truly one of the great conductors ... in addition to his other God-given gifts.

Just played this for my college's fall concert. Took it just a tad slower! That spiccato on the 4th movement is brutal! (Non- music major bass player POV of course ;) )

In the Sentimental Saraband, I hear Bach's influence from the 2nd movement of Bach's Concerto for 2 violins. Still beautiful what Britten did with the tune and it's poignant variations. What a great homage.

I played this on viola during my late teens. I loved this composition!
