1: Broken English was a British band formed in 1987 by Steve Elson (singer and guitarist), who at the time performed in a The Rolling Stones tribute band. He wrote a song called "Comin' on Strong", which had a Stones sound to it. A friend heard the song and thought it was too good to be a one-off novelty song and encouraged Elson to put together a band and record more material. The first single did reasonably well reaching UK #18, however the two follow-up singles did not fare so well.

2: Broken English is an Aborignal rock band from Ngukurr in the Northern Territory, Australia. Consisting of former members of the Yugul Band (1969-75), Broken English gained a following in the 1990s as a premier live hard-rock act. The band's debut album "Studio Sessions" was released on compact disk through Skinny Fish Records in 2001. While Studio Sessions is essentially a country record, Broken English's intense live shows have earned the band a reputation as a hard-rock band. Resultingly, Broken English have largely been ignored by mainstream country and indigenous music media in Australia and globally. The band has achieved a cult following through its renowned live performaces and the tenacity of archivalist listeners who have located a copy of the rare Studio Sessions album.

One thing that seriously bothered me is that when I’m talking about a conversation I had with my parents to my friends they ALWAYS WITHOUT FAIL interrupt me and ask,” in your language right?” This REALLY bothers me to this day I don’t understand why this is a relevant question

Also in the past people have asked me what language I think in and THAT is an example of a good question the answer is whatever language I speak the most ( for me english)

@Wingfu Fung Yes because there are words you can't express and associates therefore English takes an advantage when words can be used in abstract it forwards abstract thoughts I suggest you guys watch xiaomincu where he talks about how less words affect you're understanding of world and to say at least tribes can't comprehend abstract ideas because mostly are composed of signals and words for only observable environment and not abstract ideas like the other languages.

Language do affect intelligence and english is a large ass language with large ass vocabulary the abstract ideas you can take and associates is a tremendous significant in english language and other languages the more vocabulary your language have the more words you can express to slang,informal,formal to grand ideas that is why migrants need to learn english on there respective host country.

I think people really underestimate how hard it is to know more than one language let alone speak it fluently. All the hard work is worth it though but it sucks that when foreigners move or visit the U.S they are just expected to know English I can't help but feel bad for them.

My father's mother spoke broken English with a strong Yiddish accent, which embarrassed him. He didn't let her know when there with school nights for parents to meet the teachers. Suddenly, she showed up at one of them and met his favorite teacher, who had encouraged him. At the end, his teacher took him aside and told him how charmed he was to meet his lively, lovely mother. Suddenly my father realized how wrong he had been to be ashamed of his mother. (Widowed, with nothing, she brought up 6 children with humor and love.) I am named for her.

I remember moving to the US at 13, and my dad trying his best with english. Me and my brother, since we knew more english, we would poke fun at my dad's english because it was the worst of all of us. He would always tell us that the people at his job said he spoke very good english and we'd laugh at his face. It wasn't until I was already in college that I felt regretful of making fun of my dad. His english still isn't great. He got fired from a job and spent almost a year without a job because all of his interviews were over the phone and since he wasn't very good at explaining things simply using words in english, he had trouble getting hired. And for the first time, he told me, crying (and this man never cries), he told me, "you know, my english is very bad." And explained how he never realized it until he went through countless of phone interviews, and people having trouble understanding what he was saying. Me and my brother had the privilege of learning english halfway through our lives. My parents did not.

His English might not be that bad. He might have just failed at having a good interview because he was not prepared. I think if he works on it diligently, he can beat it. Even native speakers need to get prepared, memorize some kind of template and theme sentences to look attractive in an interview. If he had managed to work there his life halfway through and did not have any problem until then, it really could be that. I am not a native speaker of English myself but I saw pretty many native speakers just live by a few hundreds words for years because circumstances do not require any change. Occupational English is difficult. This is no about being intelligent or educated , either. Time changes, languages also change and we learn from all our experiences. See the silver lining.

My Indian mum comes from Nepali immigrants to India, and my German-Indian dad wad born to German immigrants who fled after Germany lost ww2 to British India. My dad can't speak good Hindi and my mum can't speak good English, and me and my sibling were raised to speak German, Hindi, Nepali and English. I'm sure a ton of sacrifices were made by her parents, but coming to the US wasn't one of them. When the US withdrew and the North Vietnamese entered the South, they were killing anyone they even suspected had fought for the South Vietnamese army. Getting out was survival.

@ChereiPeach my mum had similar frustrations with teachers at my schools, they'd look down on her for her weak english, and she was looking down on their entire education system coz it was nowhere near the high level she had gone through. australia pulled an extra prank on those with uni degrees though... "well, our standard is much higher so we don't recognize your degree as valid or being of the same level as our own..." (= ~ =? )
mum ended up in school cleaning, like many others, and always laughed that if something happened to all the fancier folks, the school cleaners could rise up and takeover coz they were all highly educated immigrants with years of experience in their fields etc etc..
and teachers still looked down on her coz of her accent and muddling words in english.. ... so i'd correct the teacher's english in return. to defend mum. teachers didn't like that. :O

I teach ESL in Korea and most of my Korean is aimed at pure survival or scolding/directing children. I've lived here for 12 years and people assume I'm fluent. I wish, but I haven't really not been working to actually study the language since college. My free time was more about recharging to not be an angry teacher. People who speak solely English making fun of another person who speaks broken English is the most infuriating thing to me. At least these people are out here, making an effort to learn and make a living. Have you ever tried to learn a language? It's not easy. I'd be less angry if they were at least bilingual. They've never had to flee from a country to a completely unfamiliar one. Some people just have no respect.

as a non native speaker who has a thick accent, I personally differentiate between being made fun of it and contempted. I take the fun light heartedly without any fragility when it's a nice banter, I enjoy it too. No need for commotion because it is not a malicious thing to get infuriated about. But what about say you are caught up in a naive state of mind and suddenly get caught up with it now then what? As a strategy if you welcome it maturely, people don't get enough reaction so they usually tend to get bored and leave it. However when people insult and openly show disrespect, their tone is serious, and even after being warned about it, persisting then that's quite different. In that case, like in many other abusive situations, the best thing is bidding a farewell with a smiling "bye" and withdrawing from them to kill them with kindness.

Asian languages (especially Korean and Japanese) tend to be quite different from English. it's cool that you find English easy, but it's not for everyone. For most native English speakers, Asian languages tend to be pretty difficult to learn as well.

I constantly have to translate my mom in Japanese in order for her to understand. Last time I was at a restaurant with her and they were asking something and I couldn’t really understand because at the time I was about 5 only knowing how to speak Japanese and me and my mom were so confused. Actually, most Americans are nice to people that don’t speak English well. I worked at a job in high school with a lot of immigrants, and the Americans would just use our body language or say basic words or phrases to our coworkers.

@emily cassar I'm from Shanghai so I'll only speak for Shanghai. It's quite common for young people in Shanghai to speak English fluently or at least conversationally so at least among young people those who speak English exceptionally well aren't necessarily looked up to. Maybe being able to speak English is a big deal for people outside of big cities like Shanghai or for the older generation, but it's quite common among young people living in big cities.

This video really resonated with me. My parents’ first language is Spanish and when I was young, their English was not as good as now. My mother still gets anxiety speaking English and it comes out broken. And it broke my heart when people looked down on my mom for her accent. I work in a doctors office and I see so many parents come in and struggle to just even check in.. The relief is so evident on their faces when I speak my broken Spanish to them. My grammar isn't correct, I use the wrong conjugation and I mispronounce alot of the medical terms... But I feel good knowing that I tried and my efforts come from the heart ♥!

I am living in Turkey too and both of my parents are Turkish and They don't know how to speak English. I learnt English from cartoon shows and I am proud of my english. Maybe I am not fluent and I have no one to practice my english but I am fine with my accent. All I mean is, You shouldn't be upset about your accent. Only kids would bully others for speaking broken english. I moved to the US three years ago at 14 years old, and I’ve always had this unique accent from a certain region in my country which is known for its very strong accent. To my surprise, people didn’t bully me or even judge me because of my accent. I’m know 16 and I’d say I’m pretty fluent in english although I still make mistakes from time to time. Don’t worry about your english not being perfect :)

My dad’s pretty fluent in English but i still have to help him with things like taxes, license renewals, etc... and I don’t really know how to do the paper work stuff :/

So true. I started with French language when I was pretty young then English language from age 7 through 13. Now I'm 14 and I'm in a French speaking school in Canada. I get really mixed up with the two languages and I sometimes mix French with English in my speaking so the person listening to me has to figure out what I mean. Lmao

As a parent who speaks a broken version of the local language (Korean), I feel for the parents. It is so frustrating not to be able to communicate easily and many times, locals refuse to even THINK about what you are trying to communicate. My husband is a local and sometimes he has a hard time communicating with people because he is thinking in 2 languages, not one, and forgets the local word. Plus, my daughter's daycare teacher just thinks my daughter doesn't understand the local language because her mother doesn't speak it fluently. I can understand 90% of what they tell me but can only express 10% of what I want to say. She is only 2 and is a bit slower than the other kids, I'm not worried but they seem to think everything is a language issue and she won't make any friends and will think when she can't communicate in Korea, she will think everyone is racist. SHE IS 2!! I'm starting to think one of them is a bit racist...

I’m blessed to have a mother who learned English as I was learning when we came to this country. My dad speaks broken English but I love him and he understands what everyone says so it’s okay :)
He knows how to defend himself as well and my mom can be very intimidating haha

This video is too relatable. I breakdown every single time I watch it. I remember being embarrassed of the fact that my parents couldn't speak English all throughout my school life but then feeling guilty that I was embarrassed. But I'm extremely proud of my parents. Hats off to all those parents out there who sacrificed their life and take a hit to their pride just to give their kids a better life.

This brought tears to my eyes. I work as a customer service representative and today this man called in and as soon as one word came out of my moith he said: "I can't understand you're broken english" he was so mean, yelled a couple of bad word and hung up on me. That broke my heart. But now I know I'm not the only one struggling to being understood and that makes me feel less alone and glad I have the opportunity to learn a total new language to me.

My mom understands some English. So does my dad. They both work in places where mostly English is spoken. But as they never came to the U.S. at a young age English for them is hard to pronounce. Because when you learn something at a really young age it’s easier for you to learn. You absorb it easily. But as you grow older it gets harder

Love this video! I hated to translate as well when I was little. My dad knows and understands more now. But my mother feels like people will make fun of her pronounciation, which in public they have, so she only practices at home. At our local WalMart or other stores I often hear tourists talk in their own language. I wouldn't even dream or think of asking or telling them "Hey, you're in America, speak English...." Why people do that is beyond me. If someone talks to me and it's a language I don't understand all I say is "Sorry, don't know what you're saying." Otherwise since they are not talking to me, why make that comment?

I have been speaking english from roughly 13 till now (i'm 22), more or less on a weekly or daily basis, and i still sound like a non-native speaker. Sometimes the sounds still don't come out all natural for me and i fully embrace that. The main function for me is to be able to speak with other people and learn new words, sentences, slang, sayings and so on.

I love the fact that my parents speak broken English. It's fun to teach them the correct pronunciation of a word if they mess it up. Sometimes it can be a bit hard while trying to translate some words to them, but other than that it's fantastic. Once my mom said penis wrong and it was the funniest thing I ever heard.

There are a few of people who looked down at me just because i speak English with accent. It bothered me. Until i realise that i speak three languages and i actually sound me when i speak English with my accent. Those people who look down at others for their broken English are certainly trapped in their so-called English speaking country. They've simply never been out of their comfort zone.

I was born and grew up in California my whole life, specifically speaking with an American accent. My parents are Asian immigrants who speak broken english. They never taught me how to speak their native language but always spoke it to each other at home (though I could understand the language fairly well). My friends know this. I picked up on a couple of my parents' speaking habits such as saying "open/close the lights/TV" instead of "turn on/off". I'd have trouble saying things that I wanted to in a clear and concise way, say a lot of run on sentences, and mispronounce words. I noticed that when my friends who were immigrants or were also like me and spoke with a non-white accent talked while having similar habits as me, our friends would have more patience with them and not correct their mispronunciations, grammar errors, etc. But when I would talk, they would have less patience with me trying to process my sentences and words well, regularly correcting me with a contempt or even making snarky comments about how I talked. They've commented on my specific habit that I mentioned earlier saying "Dude, it's 'turn on the lights' not 'open the lights'. Like who says that? No one." Meanwhile to my non-white accent speaking friends they'd correct in a gentler way: "Oh there's no plural form for 'deer,' actually, but you're fine." Not sure if anyone else has experienced the same, but it's like people expected me to speak English perfectly as I had a white accent while they just accepted that people with non-white accents supposedly just won't speak English well.

as someone who has parents who speak broken English yes it does get frustrating when you have to translate everything but it does have it's benefits, you also get communication skills.

but personally my friends always ask me "why can't your parents speak English if they've lived here more than 25 years"
well Ashley, may be it's because they prioritised taking care of me rather than learning some language they don't need.

I also think us kids with parents who don't speak good English have it the worst only because imagine having to translate things racist, rude, uneducated people say to your parents.

well i' am the one who doesn't speak proper english. people do not appreciate how exhausting it is to clean up the accent and speak properly too while keeping up with the cultural nuances . sometimes I am burned out and i seek refuge in german.I feel free and when I am back in europe. I feel cleansed again. My son can't understand this now , i just hope one day he'll understand what I am going through. I am working on a project that needs a voice over in english. Here I am , I can't do this , i have to ask him to provide the voice for me.

Watching this made me cry... I grew up with my grand parents and I remember people came to me and say "it must be hard for you I heard your grand mother doesn't even know a single french word." I could barely speak her polynesian language, my granny could barely speak french. My grandpa taught me english to talk with his family. Now, I can't be more grateful because even if they didn't go school they taught me the most important thing : love has no fence, no obstacle ! They showered me with their love not knowing how to say "i love you, darling" and it's the most important thing to remember.

In literally crying, this video was in my recommendations and I’m so glad I clicked on it. It felt like they were talking directly to me cause I’m going through that right now. When that one girl said that she translated because her parents sacrificed everything for her to live a better life hit me so hard cause that’s the same for me. When I was younger, I didn’t mind the fact that my parents couldn’t understand English very well. My dad speaks broken English and my mom only knows a few words. However, because of that, I was able to learn another language and become bilingual.

As I grew older however, I was embarrassed that after so many years of living here in the US, my mom still couldn’t learn English. I hated how she couldn’t connect with my friends and teachers because of the language barrier. And I hated how she couldn’t get help because barely anyone else on our community spoke the same language as her.

So I tried really hard to teach her English. And it worked! However, as I grew older, I started to forget the language.

I regret teaching and forcing my mom to do something she didn’t need to do for my sake. I now understand that she couldn’t learn the language because all she did was work. She never had time to because she was always busy and she came home, she was always tired.

I teared up watching this. My parents are in the exact same position. They can get by with speaking and reading, but often ask me to explain things or to talk to sales representatives. They both left Poland when it was under communism and met in Greece. They then moved to New Zealand where my brother was born and finally landed in Canada.
I hate it that sometimes I get impatient with them. But it's at moments like these that I remember that they did so much for me.

My whole family moved to the US a couple years ago and my family and I had to learn a completely different language and I remember in Elementary school kids would ask me something and laugh at me and I would feel terrible.
