Guy is known for his showmanship; for example, he plays with drumsticks and walks into the audience whilst playing, the latter being a gimmick he picked up from a local blues guitarist at an early age (joining or leaping into the audience has also long been common in both American popular and gospel music, as in the earlier work of Big Jay McNeely or the Dixie Hummingbirds).
Guy grew up in Louisiana where he learned to play guitar. In the early 1950s he began performing with bands in Baton Rouge. Soon after moving to Chicago in 1957, Guy fell under the influence of "Mighty" Muddy Waters. In 1958 he won a record contract with Artistic Records after beating the West Side guitarists Magic Sam and Otis Rush in a "Head Cutting Contest" at the Blue Flame Club. Soon afterwards he recorded for the Cobra label.
In the early 1960s, Guy was a session guitarist for Chess Records. He recorded on Junior Wells sessions for Delmark Records under the pseudonym Friendly Chap in 1965 and 1966. His career took off during a blues revival period in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and was sparked by Eric Clapton's request that Guy be part of the '24 nights' all-star blues guitar lineup at London's Royal Albert Hall and Guy's subsequent signing with Silvertone Records.
Kiss Me Quick
Buddy Guy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Time is tight
Let's get walking partner
Why incite a riot
Kiss me quick
Now's our chance to be alone
You're so fine
We ain't got much time
All in the kitchen
Up against the wall
Anyway you want me
We got no time to stall
Kiss me quick
Now's our chance to be alone
You're so fine
We ain't got much time
Kiss me quick
Just gotta do it
I know we can make something hot
Time is running out
I know we ain't got time to talk
Kiss me quick
Now's our chance to be alone
You're so fine
We ain't got much time
Kiss me quick
In Buddy Guy's song "Kiss Me Quick" the lyrics describe two lovers who are short on time but eager to become intimate before their chance passes. The opening lines set the tone by stating that time is tight and the clock is ticking, as if to suggest that the window of opportunity is closing fast. It seems as if the lovers have been faced with obstacles preventing them from expressing their desires, but now is their chance to be alone and connect intimately. The line "Why incite a riot" perhaps suggests that there may be societal pressure or disapproval surrounding their relationship, and they don't want to draw too much attention or make a scene.
The second verse describes the lovers in the kitchen, up against the wall, indicating an urgency and urgency in their actions. They are willing to do it any way the other wants, demonstrating their comfort and trust with each other. The repetition of the line "Kiss me quick" throughout the song is like a mantra, as if they are reminding each other to act fast and not waste a moment. The final verse encourages the lovers to take this chance and make something hot, confident that time is running out and they must act quickly.
Overall, the lyrics in "Kiss Me Quick" convey a sense of desperation, desire, and excitement as two lovers take advantage of their limited time to be alone and connect physically.
