Going Through The Motions
Buffy the Musical Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The same arrangement
I go out and fight the fight
Still I always feel
This strange estrangement
Nothing here is real
Nothing here is right
Just hoping no one knows
That I've been
Going through the motions,
Walking through the part
Nothing seems to penetrate my... heart
(stakes a vamp)
I was always brave
And kind of righteous
Now I find I'm wavering
Crawl out of your grave
You find this fight just
Doesn't mean a thing
Vampire: She ain't got that swing
(knocks her down)
Buffy: Thanks for noticing
Two vamps and a goatlike demon:
She does pretty well
With fiends from hell
But lately we can tell
That she's just
Two Vamp: Going through the motions
(Buffy slays one with a sword)
Goatlike Demon: Going through the motions
One Vamp: Faking it somehow
(Buffy kicks him)
Goatlike Demon: She's not even half the girl she...
(Buffy guts him with the sword)
...Owwwww!
Buffy: Will I stay this way forever?
Sleepwalk through my life's endeavour?
(cuts the knot to free a handsome man tied to a tree)
Saved Guy: How can I repay —
Buffy: Whatever!
I don't want to be
Going through the motions
Losing all my drive
I can't even see
If this is really me
and I just wanna be
(slays a vampire)
....Alive
In Buffy the Musical's song "Going Through The Motions," Buffy, the titular character and vampire slayer, laments her feeling of disconnection with her surroundings. The song starts with the lyrics "Every single night, the same arrangement, I go out and fight the fight..." indicating how her routine to protect the world is monotonous and without inspiration. She describes the feeling of being estranged from everything happening around her, highlighting that "nothing seems to penetrate" her heart.
Furthermore, she admits to "making shows of trading blows" and going through the motions without being fully present. She ends up asking the existential questions "Will I stay this way forever? Sleepwalk through my life’s endeavor?" which indicates her frustration with the repetitiveness of her existence. Through the song, Buffy realizes the importance of living for the moment and being present in her life rather than just going through the motions.
Overall, the song shows the psychological struggles of Buffy as a superhero, fighting off evil repeatedly and the toll it takes on her. She yearns for a more fulfilling life, where she doesn't have to pretend, and she doesn't have to be the superhero everyone expects her to be.

This is magnificent, as is the entire episode, but TWO bits really stand out to me.
FIRST!
Buffy "Crawl out of your grave, you find this fight just doesn't mean a thing."
Vampire "She ain't got that swing."
(ELLA FITZGERALD) "IT doooon't mean a THHIIIIIING! If it AIIIIIN'T GOT THAAAAAT Swwwwiiiiing...do wa do wa do wa do wa do wa do wa dowaaaaa.
Joss Whedon "Thanks for noticing."
Me "You're welcome"
SECOND!
I just think the line and delivery of, "I was always brave, and kind of righteous." Is just just hilarious. The "Kind of Righteous" is the best, because it's....actually kind of true. She is just..."kind of righteous." Excellent writing.
AAAALLLRIGHT edited, one more
When the two Vamps and the Demon are singing "Going through the motions" together. The way they are just ignoring buffy just shows how silly and amazing Joss is when it comes to his universe. They truly are so invested in this song, they will die for it. Yes Sweet is causing them to sing, but still...hilarious.

This is by far THE best musical episode of any show. The songs were purposeful. Each characters conflict played out through gorgeously written songs. The key is the imperfection too. They aren't professional singers (for the most part) and they aren't singing covers for fun. It was just people singing out there feelings and i always loved it no matter what
@buttercupcoffee5972
I feel like this is the reason shows are still doing sing along episode into their shows.
@danniep2737
this one and Once Upon a Time, best musical episodes
@dirdib69
Xena's musical episode is the only one I've seen in the same league.
@danniep2737
@dirdib69 U should watch Once Upon A Time, it also has a musical episode in the 6th season, like Buffy, and it is AMAZING
@buttercupcoffee5972
@dirdib69 oh didnt know Xena had one too.
@frankiealice4879
It's amazing how this song really captured Buffy's depression without explicitly mentioning it. A masterful job.

I want to like but you're at 777 jackpot so here's a comment instead :)
@Halfsteptheory
The entire show was masterfully done...excpet parts of season 1 and season 4...but MOST of it was perfect.
