The Other Country
Burlap To Cashmere Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your eyes see the shining city
Your love heels the poisoned mind
When the journey ends
There's a new beginning
When the risen man
Heals the weight of time

I can feel it over the line

I see the other country
I see the other side
Do not be afraid of this earthly city
Do not be afraid when the pharaohs nigh

Draw near the lambs awaiting
Where the river runs through the sky's align

From that painting of a ship
We have all been chosen
To the painters creation
In his dream design

I can feel it over the line
I see the other country
I see the other side
Do not be afraid of this earthly city
Do not be afraid when the pharaohs nigh
When I was a child
I walked like a child
But now I'm a soldier
Like the Bride and Groom I will be married

I see the other country
I see the other side
Do not be afraid of this earthly city
Do not be afraid when the pharaohs nigh

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
Even though I sink through the ocean
You will rescue me
I am standing in the fire
But I can hear the choir singing
I was a blind man stumbling
But now I see

I was blind, blind blind
But now I see

I was blind, blind blind
But now I see

Overall Meaning

The song "The Other Country" by Burlap to Cashmere is a song about seeing beyond what is present in this world into something greater. The lyrics speak to the idea that there is another place - another country - that one can go to, a place that allows the soul to heal and restore. It contrasts the earthly city with the other country, suggesting that what exists in the other country is pure and holy, while what exists in the earthly city is often corrupt and tainted.

The song begins with the image of the "shining city" which brings to mind the image of a city bustling with activity, but also one that may be without direction or purpose. The idea of a "poisoned mind" is also introduced, which suggests that there may be thoughts and ideas that are harmful to the human psyche. The chorus repeats the idea of seeing the "other country" and the "other side," which is the vision of a place of restoration and healing, while also acknowledging that there may be fear associated with the journey.

As the song continues, the idea of being chosen by the painter as the subjects of the painting is introduced - this suggests that there is something special about those who see and seek out the other country. The reference to being a soldier and the image of the bride and groom suggest that there may be a battle or struggle that one must undergo to reach the other country, but that victory is certain. The final verse brings in the imagery of moving through difficult times, such as the valley of the shadow of death or sinking through the ocean, but asserts that rescue is always possible. Ultimately, the repetition of the phrase "I was blind, blind, blind / But now I see" speaks to the transformative power of the other country.

Loved this band so. Such intellect, such heart. This is their best. Leave it to them to incorporate straight biblical (the shining city in the Gospels, Exodus, Psalms, Revelation), hymnal, multiple Pauline, Shakespearean and Socratic references, yet so seamlessly(!) and, more importantly, in as soulful of a song as I'm ever gonna hear. Great harmony, too. It seems I can only play this song at least five times in a row, no less.
'The other county ... the other side'
... ('The undiscover'd country from whose bourn,
'No traveller returns')
- - Hamlet's poignant 'To be or not to be speech'
