About us: We’re a 2-man band/studio project, 100% self-produced – we write, compose, perform, record, mix, and master all elements of our music. Control freaks? Yes. Our story began 15 years earlier in the high-school metal band we formed together. We tirelessly practiced and gigged and had visions of rock stardom. Soon after high school ended, careers and families slowly took over, and by our early 20’s we had let our musical aspirations fade into the background. But we never lost touch, never stopped writing, and after 10 years we finally decided to stop reminiscing and start recording an album, “Burn the Rez”, released in 2014.
Losing My Religion
Burn the Rez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's bigger than you
And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no, I've said too much
I've said enough
That's me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no, I've said too much
I haven't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
Every whisper
Of every waking hour
I'm choosing my confessions
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt, lost and blinded fool, fool
Oh no, I've said too much
I've said enough
Consider this
Consider this, the hint of the century
Consider this, the slip
That brought me to my knees, failed
What if all these fantasies come
Flailing around
Now I've said too much
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
But that was just a dream
That was just a dream
That's me in the corner
That's me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no, I've said too much
I haven't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
But that was just a dream
Try, cry, why try
That was just a dream
Just a dream
Just a dream, dream
The lyrics to Losing My Religion by Burn the Rez are filled with metaphors and symbolism. It speaks of the pressures of life and the lengths one is willing to go to navigate through it. The first few lines explain that life is bigger than the individual and that there is a distance that lies between people which is depicted in the metaphor of "the distance in your eyes."
The main character in the song is losing their religion as they try to keep up with someone. This person is not identified but rather lingers in the background, as the character struggles to maintain a connection. The lines "I thought that I heard you laughing, I thought that I heard you sing, I think I thought I saw you try" may suggest that this individual once tried and failed but refuses to try again.
The theme of confession is also prominent in the lyrics of the song as the character is choosing to confess their struggles instead of hiding them. All of this is described brilliantly with metaphors of losing religion and trying to keep up with someone, creating a sense of desperation and futility.
