Summer of 03 I was walking over bridges
Trying to find my way to me
When the problem was restored
I can't describe the damage done
This would be the first time
And no, it wasn't fun
Axe to grind so put me on the battle field
Where hardcore goes to die
Can I get a hell yeah
(If you're as lost as I am)
Yeah dawg
(If you hate that expression)
Doggin' on others is now my profession
Since you blew the lights out in my heart
I'm feeling kinda bored so lets go charge up
The car let's all put on those trucker hats
And head out to a bar
We'll end up in the Standard in the bathroom
Doin' coke this very Hollywood
And yeah I get the joke
Everything tastes better when the
Novocaine sets in so have a second helping
Of the ones you call your friends
Can I get a hell yeah
(If you're as lost as I am)
Yeah dawg
(If you hate that expression)
Doggin' on others is now my profession
Since you blew the lights out in my heart
Why don't ya all f-f-f-fade away
Vodka rhymes with lotsa,
Bourbon rhymes with hurtin'
These are things I'm gonna feel
This much I know is certain
Can I get a hell yeah
(If you're as lost as I am)
Yeah dawg
(If you hate that expression)
Doggin' on others is now my profession
Since you blew the lights out in my heart
The lyrics to Butch Walker's song "Lights Out" speak of a time in the past when the singer had a blackout or a breakdown in his heart during the summer of 2003. He was wandering aimlessly, trying to rediscover himself, but the problem was restored, and the damage done was unquantifiable. The song speaks of the singer's struggles with his identity and life in general, and how he ended up resorting to drugs and alcohol to cope with the pain and boredom.
The lyrics also touch on criticism and negativity that some people tend to dole out toward others, especially when they are feeling lost or hurt themselves. The lines "doggin' on others is now my profession" and "put me on the battlefield where hardcore goes to die" suggest that the singer has become desensitized to harsh remarks and ridicule from others. He has also found comfort in his own misery, and this is reflected in the lines "everything tastes better when the Novocaine sets in."
Overall, the lyrics to "Lights Out" are an introspective look at the singer's past struggles and how he coped with them. It's a song about identity, self-discovery, and finding comfort in one's own pain.
