Béatrice has played the piano since the age of three, which was initiated by her mother, a professional pianist. She later played as a keyboardist in the post-hardcore band December Strikes First when she was 15 years old. In March 2007, after five years of music education, she started composing her own songs.
After a brief stint as keyboardist for Bonjour Brumaire, a French-Canadian Indie Rock/Indie Pop band, she released her solo debut album Cœur de pirate in 2008 on the Québécois independent record label Grosse Boîte. The album found much critical acclaim and was subsequently nominated for Francophone Album of the Year at the 2009 Juno Awards.

The lyrics of Cœur de Pirate's song "Mistral Gagnant" paint a nostalgic and sentimental picture of a simple and carefree time in the singer's life. In the first verse, the singer longs to sit on a bench for a few minutes with someone special, observing people passing by and reminiscing about the past. Holding the hand of this person offers solace and comfort, while feeding foolish pigeons and playfully kicking them brings joy. The laughter of this person becomes a healing force for the singer's emotional wounds. The verse also mentions childhood memories, particularly of stolen candies and specific brands like Carensac, Minto, and caramel.
The second verse portrays the act of walking in the rain with the same person, appreciating the beauty of life and marveling at the Earth. The singer playfully jumps into puddles to annoy this person, enjoying their reactions and finding amusement in ruining their shoes together. Similar to the first verse, the laughter of this person is compared to the sound of the sea, capable of stopping time and making the singer feel alive. Childhood treats like Carambars, Coco Boer, and Roudoudous are mentioned, evoking a sense of nostalgia and memories of sweet moments shared together.
The third verse continues the theme of sitting on a bench, this time focusing on watching the setting sun. The singer expresses indifference towards the past and proclaims that they are not the villains in their story. They confess that if they are considered "crazy," it is only because they see the world through the eyes of the person they are with, whose eyes have the advantage of being a pair. The verse ends by associating the person's laughter with the sound of birds' cries, further emphasizing its uplifting and freeing nature. Finally, the singer imparts an important lesson about loving life and embracing it, even though time can be destructive and take away the innocence and joy of childhood.
In the concluding lines, the expression "les mistrals gagnants" is repeated, serving as a powerful metaphor throughout the song. The mistrals gagnants refer to the strong winds in the south of France, symbolizing the passing of time and the fleeting nature of happiness. These winds carry away the laughter of children, representing the loss of innocence as one grows older. However, the repetition of this phrase suggests that holding onto these cherished memories can bring comfort and a sense of nostalgia, allowing the beauty and joy of these moments to live on in one's heart.
